DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women's basketball team drew North Carolina in the first round of the 2012 Preseason Women's NIT as the bracket was released today by the organization.
The Wildcats travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., where it will battle the Tar Heels Friday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. If they advance, the 'Cats would face the winner of Duquesne and Liberty in the second round, Nov. 11, with the site and time to be determined. Teams that lose in the first or second rounds will play consolation games. The bracket will be re-drawn with regard to matchups based on considerations such as geography of teams involved, who can/cannot host and recent history of teams. The consolation bracket will be released after all of the first round games are completed.
Davidson, the co-defending regular season Southern Conference champions, has faced UNC three times (0-3), with the most recent matchup coming at the start of the 2005-06 campaign. UNC, ranked sixth to start that season, earned a 74-58 victory on its home floor.
The Tar Heels went 20-11 a season ago and return two starters. They have won four of the last eight ACC titles and are under the guidence of Sylvia Hatchell, who is entering her 27th season. Carolina's last appearance in the event was a memorable one, as the Tar Heels defeated No. 2 Oklahoma in Norman, 80-79, to capture the title.
Davidson (22-10) had one of its best seasons during head coach Michele Savage's second year. The 22 wins were one off the school-record as Savage was honored by her peers and the media with the SoCon Coach of the Year award. She also had the privilege of coaching the SoCon Player of the Year and Defender of the Year Sophia Aleksandravicius.
The 'Cats return 12 letterwinners for the 2012-13 campaign, including Aleksandravicius and All-SoCon First Team member Laura Murray. Of the 12 letterwinners who return, four of them were starters a season ago.
The Preseason WNIT kicks off the women's college basketball season. It features a three-game guarantee format, with the event opening Nov. 9 with first-round games. Second-round games will be played Nov. 11, semifinals will be Nov. 14-15, and the championship is set for Sunday, Nov. 18. Teams that lose in the first two rounds will play consolation games on the second weekend, Nov. 16-17. All games are hosted by participating schools.
In last year's Preseason WNIT No. 1 Baylor defeated No. 2 Notre Dame on its way to history's only perfect 40-0 season.
