Fountain Wins Sectional Qualifier For Carolinas Amateur Championship

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Davidson rising junior Richard Fountain won his sectional qualifier Thursday with a six-under par 66 to earn a place in the 98th Carolinas Amateur Championship to be held July 12-15 at Charlotte Country Club.
Fountain's qualifier was held on the par-72, 7102-yard course at Ironwood Golf and Country Club. The Raleigh native is representing his home course of Carolina Country Club, at which he shares the course record of 59 with recent U.S. Open Champion Webb Simpson.
Davidson rising sophomore Todd Eckstein (Durham, N.C.) and incoming freshman David Sargent (Davidson, N.C.) will also compete in the Carolinas Amateur Championship. Eckstein placed in a tie for third at a two-under 69 in a sectional qualifier held June 21 at Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C. Sargent placed in a tie for 14th with a two-over 72 at the sectional held Wednesday at The Creek Colf Club in Spartanburg, S.C.
Fountain recently placed in a tie for third at the 52nd North Carolina Amateur Championship (June 14-17), finishing one stroke shy of forcing a three-way playoff (284, -4). The tournament was held at Treyburn Country Club in Durham.
