DURHAM, N.C. – Davidson rising junior Richard Fountain placed in a tie for third, one stroke shy of forcing a three-way playoff, Sunday at the 52nd North Carolina Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Treyburn Country Club.
Fountain, a Raleigh native, fired a final-round 69 to climb the leaderboard on the fourth and final day of the tournament and finish at 284, four-under par. He tied with Scott Harvey, of Greensboro, N.C. on the par-72, 7047-yard course. Fountain fired a 72 in the first round and a one-over 73 Friday, but was able to get under par Saturday with a two-under 70.
Matthew Crenshaw, a 30-year-old car salesman from Burlington, took home the Billy Joe Patton Trophy with a par on the first playoff hole over recent East Carolina University graduate Adam Stephenson of Greenville. Crenshaw and Stephenson finished at five-under 283.
As one of the top-30 players, Fountain earned an exemption into the 53rd North Carolina Amateur Championship that will be played June 13-16, 2013 at Forsyth Country Club in Winston-Salem. Also earning an exemption was incoming Davidson freshman David Sargent, who placed in a tie for 30th at 298 (72-75-73-78), 10-over par.
The championship event was conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association, which is in its 103rd year of serving amateur golf in the Carolinas.
