SOMERS, Wisc. – Davidson junior Drew Onken has been named Mid-Major All-America by CollegeSwimming.com, while seniors Geoff Peitz and Curtis Chaney earned honorable mention honors, it was announced today.
Onken, who was named Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention in each of the last two seasons, became the first male swimmer from Davidson to qualify for the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships this year. He qualified with his time of 3:47.38 in the 400 IM and also had NCAA “B” cut times in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke. Onken swam all three events in the NCAAs with his best finish coming in the 400 IM, where he placed 19th.
The CCSA Swimmer of the Year and the league's Swimmer of the Meet at the 2012 conference championship, Onken was recognized as the league's Swimmer of the Week three times this season. He now holds three individual league records (200 breast, 200 IM, and 400 IM) and is a member of four relay teams that also hold the conference record.
“To be one of only nine mid-major athletes identified as All-American by CollegeSwimming.com is a great tribute to Drew's accomplishments this season,” said Davidson coach John Young. “This was a particularly challenging year for individuals to earn invitations to the NCAA Championship. I am not surprised that Drew would stand among such elite company.”
Peitz, who earns Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention honors for the second straight season, is a four-time All-CCSA selection and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team trials in the 100 back. He won the 100 and 200 back at this year's CCSA Championship meet and collected conference titles on the 400 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay teams. Peitz was named CCSA Swimmer of the Week three times and graduates holding five individual conference records (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly) and as a member of four conference record holding relay teams (200 frees, 400 free, 200 medley, 400 medley).
A four-year All-CCSA selection, Chaney also received Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention honors in 2011. He collected CCSA individual titles in the 100 free and 200 free, in which he swam an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:37.84. He also won league titles as a member of the 400 free, 800 free and 400 medley relay teams, all of which were won in CCSA and Davidson record times. Chaney was named CCSA Swimmer of the Week Oct. 18.
“This is a great honor for both Geoff and Curtis,” said Young. “The impact that each has had, and that each of their legacies will have on our program cannot be overstated. I am thrilled that they receive this very well-deserved national recognition.”
