Tentative 2012 Schedule
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Football coach Tripp Merritt announced today that seniors Pete Anderson, Lanny Funsten and Patrick Moynahan and juniors Jonathan Carkhuff and Reese Williams have been named captains for the 2012 team. The captains were selected in a vote by the student-athletes and coaching staff.
A defensive back, Anderson had 30 tackles in eight games a season ago, and recorded an interception and four pass breakups.
Funsten set a school record with 100 receptions and became just the third player in Davidson history to register over 1,000 receiving yards, finishing with 1,107. The wide receiver ranked third in FCS football in receptions and eighth in receiving yards.
He posted eight touchdowns, including a school record 99-yard catch against Johnson C. Smith. Funsten was named first-team All-America by BeyondSportsNetwork.com and All-Pioneer Football League by CollegeSportsMadness.com in addition to earning second-team All-PFL from the league.
Moynahan led the Wildcats in tackles for the second consecutive season, logging 72 stops. The linebacker collected 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and recovered a fumble.
Carkhuff led FCS football in completions (348) and ranked sixth in passing yards (3,326), setting Davidson records in both categories. The quarterback also ranked 15th in the country in total offense after averaging 276.6 yards a contest.
Williams saw action in four games in an injury-plagued sophomore season. The tight end caught 14 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. He had a career-high eight catches in the season opener at Georgetown.
The Wildcats return 12 starters and 43 lettermen from last year's squad that went 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the league. The 2012 campaign begins in Richardson Stadium against Georgetown, Sept. 1.
