ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After leading Davidson into the Southern Conference semifinals for the first time since 2007, sophomore Laura Murray (Harrisburg, Pa.) was named to the tournament's first team as announced today by the league after the championship game.
The sophomore becomes the first Wildcat since Janell Crayton to earn a spot on either the All-SoCon First or Second Tournament Team. Crayton was a first-team member in 2006. Murray is just the eighth player overall in program history to garner a nod on either team.
Murray averaged a team-best 20 points in Davidson's two games vs. Wofford and Samford. The sharp-shooter had a season-high tying 22 points in pacing the Wildcats to a 69-58 quarterfinal win over the Terriers. She hit half of her 14 shots, including going 3-of-6 from downtown, and dished out a team-best five dimes on her way to her eighth 20-point outing of the season.
The guard caught fire in the first half vs. the Terriers, scorching the nets for 10 straight points, and 13 total, during a 17-4 run to help the 'Cats grab a 21-15 advantage with 8:04 on the clock. Prior to the run, Davidson was down at one point 10-4.
Murray followed with an 18-point, three-assist and three-steal game vs. the Bulldogs in a semifinal contest. She hit 6-of-7 free throws and finished the tournament 11-for-13 overall. The double-figure scoring game was Murray's 26th of the season and 45th for her career.
An All-SoCon First Team pick by both the coaches and media this season, Murray had a standout second year after winning the SoCon Freshman of the Year honor a season ago. She paced the Wildcats with a 14.7 points per game average, good for second-best in the league, and her 64 triples are two away from the single-season school record.
Samford, who defeated Davidson 62-51 in the semifinals, took home its second league tournament title in a row with a victory over Appalachian State in the championship game.
Murray and Davidson will represent the SoCon with the automatic bid into the Women's NIT, which will be determined on late Monday, March 12, after the NCAA selections. The Wildcats tied ASU with a 17-3 league mark, but won both games vs. the Mountaineers this year in two-game series. It will be the 'Cats second-ever postseason bid, after the 2006-07 team earned a spot in the WNIT.
