Hopkins, Pagonis Shatter Davidson 5000m Record at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C./ROCK HILL, S.C. – Senior Ryan Hopkins and junior Demetrios Pagonis both surpassed the previous Davidson men's track and field standard in the 5000-meter run at the Raleigh Relays Friday on Derr Track.
The Wildcats also competed at the Winthrop Invitational on Winthrop's John Belk Track.
Hopkins and Pagonis finished in seventh and eighth in the second section of the 5000m, with Hopkins becoming the new Wildcat record holder with a time of 14:12.79. Pagonis crossed the line in 14:17.27 to also surpass the previous standard set by Charlie Schmitt at the same event last year of 14:27.21.
Sophomore Andrew Lantz also competed in Raleigh and placed second in the third section of the 1500-meter run in a Davidson all-time top-10 best time of 3:50.53.
At Winthrop, senior #Taylor Martin was Davidson's top sprinter, qualifying for the finals in the 400-meter dash in 49.98 seconds. Sophomore Pierce DeRico placed third in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.41 seconds.
Sophomore Stewart Dalton leaped to an eighth-place finish of 20 feet, 11.25 inches (6.38m).
Competition at Winthrop will continue Sautrday.
