SEATTLE – Davidson men's soccer alumnus Alex Caskey has been transferred from the USL PRO's Charleston Battery to Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders FC, the clubs announced Tuesday.
Caskey, a 2011 Davidson graduate who completed his classes this past fall, enjoyed an excellent rookie season with the Battery in 2011 playing 22 games, scoring one goal with one assist.
“I am extremely excited to join the Sounders, the team that originally drafted me last year,” said Caskey. “The organization, the city and the fans are unbelievable and it is a dream come true to play for such a great team. I am looking forward to continuing my development and having a successful season.”
Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms were not disclosed.
“Alex is more of an attacking midfielder than a defensive midfielder,” said Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid. “He has very quick feet, and he is a player that works very hard but also has that nose for goal and looks to get forward.”
A native of Dunwoody, Ga, Caskey was originally selected by Seattle in the third round (47th overall) of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft to become the earliest selected player from Davidson. A two-year team captain for the Wildcats, Caskey was a three-time All-Southern Conference first team selection and a two-time NSCAA All-South Region second-team selection. He finished his Davidson career following the 2010 season with 19 goals and 15 assists for 53 points, and did not miss a single match, starting all 76.
“Major League Soccer is not only the premier soccer league in the U.S., but the Sounders are one of the top clubs,” noted Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “The Sounders led last year in average attendance with over 35,000 per game. There is no question that Alex improved from his successful rookie campaign with the Charleston Battery. Davidson Soccer is so proud.”
