Davidson Wrestling Snaps Losing Streak Against Millersville

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Davidson wrestling team snapped a 16-match dual match losing streak dating back to last season with freshman Ed Isola's pin at 197 pounds for a 24-20 victory over Millersville on Saturday at Gardner-Webb University's Paul Porter Arena.
Entering the 197-pound match Davidson (1-11) held a 18-14 lead, but was essentially down 21-17 unable to send a heavyweight to the mat in the ensuing bout. Needing a win to claim the match, Isola pinned Joel Suter of Millersville (2-9) in 1:47.
The Wildcats never trailed in the match. After claiming the 125-pound bout by forfeit, Joshua Ruppert evened the match for Millersville at 6-6 with a quick pin at 133 pounds. Freshmen Ben Hartshorn and Kevin Birmingham answered for Davidson and scored back-to-back decisions at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively, to give Davidson a 12-6 lead.
Another Millersville win by fall at 157 pounds evened the match at 12-12. Senior Tyler Mullen then earned an 8-7 victory at 165 pounds over Millersville's Brandon Vernalli and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty resulted in the deduction of one team point for Millersville, giving the 'Cats a 15-11 lead.
Freshman Ian Solcz earned an 11-6 decision at 174 pounds that Millersville answered at 184 pounds, but Isola's win by fall tipped the match in Davidson's favor.
Davidson next hosts Anderson University and St. Andrew's Tuesday in Belk Arena at 7 p.m.
