Fountain, Davidson Near Top of Leaderboard In Competitive Field at Seahawk Intercollegiate

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sophomore Richard Fountain sits two strokes off the lead individually, and he and his Davidson teammates are fourth (590), three strokes ahead of 31st-ranked Liberty through the first two rounds of UNC Wilmington's Seahawk Intercollegiate, completed Sunday at the Country Club of Landfall.
Fountain shot a three-under-par 69 in the first round and an even-par 72 in the second to finish the day on the 6,946-yard Nicklaus Course with 141 strokes, tied with Lee Bedford of Wake Forest for second place. Wesley Bryan of South Carolina is first at 139 (68+71), five–under-par, while Fountain and Bedford are one stroke ahead of Stephan Jaeger (Chattanooga) and Caleb Sturgeon (South Carolina). Jaeger, the two-time defending Southern Conference Player of the Year is ranked 10th in the nation in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin player rankings and is on the Ben Hogan Award Watch List.
The Wildcats (No. 117) are the lone team not ranked in the Top 100 of the Golfweek/Sagarin team rankings amongst the top-seven teams in the 12-team field. East Carolina (No. 51) leads at 578 (296+282), two-over-par by six strokes over second-place and 45th-ranked Wake Forest (584, +8). Davidson's lone Southern Conference rival in the field, 26th-ranked Chattanooga, is just two strokes ahead in third at 588 (300+288).
The 'Cats were consistent, combining to fire a first-round 296 and a second-round 294. South Carolina (No. 78) trails by one stoke in fifth (591), while 31st-ranked Liberty and 88th-ranked UNCW are tied for sixth at 593.
Junior John Skeadas also had a strong outing for Davidson, finishing the day in a tie for 12th with a two-round score of 146 (75+71), two-over-par. Sophomore Sam Echikson fired a pair of 75's to place in a tie for 23rd (150), while freshman Ralph Blasey rounded out the scoring group at 153 (77+76) in a tie for 36th place.
Davidson will be teeing off for the third and final round at 9 a.m. Monday.
