SEATTLE, Wash. – The Seattle Sounders of the MLS (Major League Soccer) recently announced that they have exercised their option on former Davidson standout Alex Caskey, signing him for the 2013 season.
“I am excited for the opportunity to return to the Sounders,” said Caskey. I will strive to make more progress as a player and hope to contribute to another great year for the team.”
A native of Dunwoody, Ga., Caskey was originally selected by Seattle in the third round (47th overall) of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft to become the earliest selected player from Davidson. A two-year team captain for the Wildcats, Caskey was a three-time All-Southern Conference first team selection and a two-time NSCAA All-South Region second-team selection. He finished his Davidson career following the 2010 season with 19 goals and 15 assists for 53 points, and did not miss a single match, starting all 76.
After being loaned to the Charleston Battery for one season, Caskey was retained as a full-time player for the Sounders in 2012. As a rookie, Caskey played in 28 contests, including 21 starts, while recording three goals and seven assists.
In addition to setting up the game-winning strike in his MLS debut, Caskey scored his first career goal in front of 60,000 fans against the LA Galaxy on ESPN2.
Comments from Davidson head coach Matt Spear
Alex had an incredible rookie season for Seattle. The coaching staff and fans have embraced him for his talent, his consistency and his work ethic.
To play for a club like the Sounders who always lead the league in attendance and that celebrate the sport so well is a dream come true for an American player.
We at Davidson are of course incredibly excited for Alex. We are proud that his experience at Davidson prepared him to be a professional at the highest level.
And I know it inspires his former teammates, current Davidson players, and even more great players looking to Davidson as a place to get one of the best degrees in the nation while developing their passion for soccer.
