Wildcats Have Strong Showing on Second Day of TPSC Invitational

GAMBIER, Ohio – A trio of top-five relay finishes and record-setting swims from Meredith Nakano and Drew Onken headlined the action for the Davidson men's and women's swimming and diving teams as they participated in day two of the Total Performance Swim Camps Invitational, hosted by Kenyon College on Friday afternoon.
Nakano and Onken each picked up a win and a runner-up finish; with Onken adding in a meet and pool record as well. Each broke a program record, with Onken setting a new 100-yard breaststroke record in the prelims with a time of 56.09 while Nakano set a new Davidson mark in the 200-yard butterfly. Nakano's performance helped the women's team to sit in third place through event 38 with 359 points. Penn has the team lead at 898.5 points while host Kenyon is in second with 624.5. For the men, the Wildcats are currently fourth with 229.5 points. Penn also has the lead for the men's side with 848.5 points, followed by Kenyon in second with 752.5 and Carnegie Melon in third with 294 points.
Both the women's and men's 200-free “A” relays placed in the top five of the meet. Nakano combined with Jean DeOrnellas, Carolina Vrana and Lauren Malachowski to take fourth place in 1:36.44. Onken teamed with Wills Cooper, Cameron Bard and Brandon Kegley to swim a 1:23.94 for fifth place.
The women's squad would later wrap up competition with a third place finish in the 400-yard individual medley. Malachowski, Healy, Nakano and DeOrnellas swam a time of 3:53.31 in the event.
Nakano took home a runner-up finish in the 200-yard butterfly, swimming a 2:01.87 to shave nearly two seconds off of this morning's preliminary swim and set a new school record. Emily Covert also qualified for the championship final, touching the pads seventh in 2:05.66. Allison Cottle was the top swimmer in the bonus final, taking ninth overall in a time of 2:06.40. She was immediately followed by Kelsi Hobbs, who finished second in the bonus final for tenth overall in 2:07.21.
Covert finished 11th overall in the 400-yard IM, touching the wall in 4:37.04, while Anna Blair Bullock was 12th in 4:38.47.
Nakano later picked up her first win of the meet, taking first in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:04.37. Vrana also made the championship final in the event, taking seventh with a 1:07.50.
Malachowski, DeOrnellas and Angie Healy swam the consolation final of the 200-yard freestyle, with Healy finishing 12th overall at 1:54.21. Malachowski and DeOrnellas were 13th and 14th, respectively. Malachowski clocked in at 1:54.78 while DeOrnellas swam a 1:54.88. Malachowski also qualified for the consolation final of the 100-yard backstroke, taking ninth in 57.72. Healy followed in 12th with a time of 58.84.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Nakano swam the championship final in a time of 24.04 for a fifth place finish. DeOrnellas competed in the consolation final, picking up 10th overall in a time of 24.18.
For the men, Onken took second-place in the 100-yard breaststroke by .12 of a second. He touched in 56.18 and was joined in the finals by Spencer Gill, Drew Glenn and Grant Smith who all competed in the consolation final. Gill led the way in a tie for 11th place in 59.27, with Glenn coming in 13th in 59.32. Smith swam a 59.80 for 15th place.
Onken later went on to set a new meet and pool record of 3:53.01 in the 400-yard IM, taking first by more than a second in the event. Smith was ninth in the event, swimming a 4:05.43.
Kegley represented the 'Cats in the 100-yard backstroke finals, grabbing 12th place in 52.70, while Cooper took 12th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.42.
The men's 400-yard medley relay team of Onken, Kegley, Luke Burton and Adam Hunter took ninth place with a swim of 3:27.70.
The Wildcats will hit the pool for the final two sessions of the meet on Saturday. Following Saturday morning prelims, the 'Cats will compete in the finals starting at 5:30 p.m.
