DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson, which concluded its regular season with six straight road contests, will head to No. 23 Elon for the opening round of the 2012 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
The winner will advance to the semifinals to face the victor of UNCG / Georgia Southern on Thursday, Nov. 8 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
“We need to go for it, to not hold back and to try and win each moment, like it could be the last play of the season,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “So the effort and focus must be sharp and switched on.”
Looking to end a four-game skid, the Wildcats enter the quarterfinals 6-10-1 overall after dropping a 2-0 decision at Appalachian State last weekend.
Seniors Andrew DiLallo (4G, 1A) and Peter Paras (3G, 3A) continue to pace Davidson offensively with nine points each.
Defensively, the Wildcats' Matt Pacifici leads the league with 72 saves this season.
“We will aim to do more than just defend of course because it's a win that we crave. So we need to create our own scoring chances in build-up play, in transition, and in set pieces,” Spear commented.
Chris Thomas, the nation's top-goal scorer with 21 strikes this season, scored both the Phoenix goals earlier this season in a 2-0 win over Davidson on Sept. 28 at Alumni Stadium.
“Everyone knows Chris Thomas is their primary weapon and he's had an awesome season to cap off a great college career. It's pivotal that we contain him. But they have other talented attacking players such as Matt Wescoe, Daniel Lovitz, and Gabe Latigue.”
In addition to its national ranking and regular season title, Elon (12-4-2) recorded wins over then-No. 6 Charlotte, No. 18 West Virginia, No. 22 Furman and No. 13 Wake Forest this season, while recently playing Duke to a 0-0 draw.
“But a key to winning important matches is also poise under pressure, so composure is massive too.”
