
Volleyball to Face No. 1N Samford in SoCon Quarterfinals

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Ranked fourth in the Southern Conference's South Division, the Davidson volleyball team is set to square off against top-seeded defending champion Samford in the quarterfinals of the 2012 SoCon Volleyball tournament. The Wildcats will host the tournament Saturday through Monday at Belk Arena, and will face the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.
VS. SAMFORD
The Bulldogs, who enter the match with a 22-8 overall record and 14-2 mark in league action, bested the Wildcats in a 4-1 match back in October. Samford owns a 7-1 series lead over Davidson enter the ninth all-time match up between the two. The 'Cats and the Bulldogs also faced off in the quarterfinals of the 2011 SoCon Tournament, with Samford prevailing 3-1. The Wildcats last topped the Bulldogs in 2010 when they earned a 4-3 victory at Belk Arena.

Samford enters the contest on a seven-game win streak that started Oct. 21 with their 3-1 win over the Wildcats. The last team to defeat the Bulldogs was the South Division leader Georgia Southern, who took a 3-2 win in Alabama. Outside hitter Michaela Reesor, middle blocker Lauren Hutchinson and middle blocker Katie Murphy were named to the all-conference teams earlier this week. Reesor is the team leader in kills with 403 (3.70/set) and is second in digs with 292 (2.68/set). Hutchinson leads the Bulldogs in blocks with 94 (0.86/set) and ranks second in both kills with 312 (2.86/set) and hitting percentage at .345. Murphy boasts a team-best .363 hitting percentage and has 68 (0.71) blocks and 261 kills (2.72/set) on the season.
'CATS IN THE TOURNAMENT
The Wildcats are 8-17 in the Southern Conference tournament since joining the league in 1992. They have twice won the tournament, in 1999 and 2000, advancing to the NCAA tournament those seasons. Davidson has twice faced off against Samford in the quarterfinals, falling to the Bulldogs in both 2008 and 2011. The tournament has been held at Belk Arena twice before, in 1995 and 2002.
BROWN HONORED BY SOCON
Outside hitter Caroline Brown recently earned SoCon All-Conference Second Team honors, marking the second consecutive season in which she's been honored. Brown paces the team in kills with 3.59 per set (363) and aces with 31. She is also second on the squad in digs with 3.96 per set (400).
MILESTONE WATCH
Megan Chamberlin is five aces away from serving up her 50th career service ace… Hannah Rau needs five more blocks to record the 100th of her career… Caroline Brown is one dig away from 800 and 33 kills from 900 (making her 133 from her 1,000th career kill)… Head coach Chris Willis needs 16 more wins to record the 150th of his collegiate career.
