CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Danny Garcia scored the game's only goal late in the first half to lift No. 2 North Carolina over upset-minded Davidson, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening at Fetzer Field.

The Wildcats, who knocked off then-No. 2 UNC a year ago, falls to 5-6-1 overall, while the Tar Heels move to 10-1-1.

“We knew tonight's game was going to be a big challenge, playing on the road against the defending national champions,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "They are really, really good defensively having only allowed three goals in 12 games. We weren't as composed or sharp in the attacking half as we needed to be.”

At the 40:47 mark, Garcia lofted a shot over the head of Davidson keeper Matt Pacifici from 10 yards out for his first goal of the season. Andy Craven and Jordan Gafa set up Garcia's eventual game-winner.

“I thought we did well defensively limiting their chances. It took a special play for them to score tonight," Spear commented.

"They are athletic, their front guys pressure well, and their defenders and keeper didn't make any mistakes. We had trouble unlocking them and just couldn't find a way through."

Pacifici led both goalkeepers with five saves.

“We're not satisfied losing as we didn't have the complete game on both sides of the ball. However, we definitely can't fault our effort."

The Wildcats will continue their six-game road swing to conclude the regular season with a 7 p.m. contest at SoCon-foe Wofford Saturday evening.

“Hopefully we can continue with the same energy this weekend in a crucial conference game at Wofford.”
