Davidson Swimming & Diving Earns Wins over Gardner-Webb on Senior Day

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's and women's swimming and diving teams were both victorious over Gardner-Webb on Senior Day, winning by scores of 196-89 and 170-124, respectively, Saturday afternoon in Cannon Natatorium.
The Davidson men claimed first-place finishes in 15 of the 16 events, with all five seniors earning individual victories. Curtis Chaney and Geoff Peitz notched a pair each, while Joe Burquist (100-yard Butterfly, 52.96), David Kerman (200 Butterfly, 1:57.37) and Nick Taylor (1-meter, 179.06 points) each earned one.
Freshman Meredith Nakano led the women's effort with three victories. She won the 50 Freestyle (24.45), 100 Freestyle (53.22) and 100 Butterfly (57.88), and was followed by junior Jean DeOrnellas in the 50 Freestyle (25.01) and 100 Freestyle (54.53). Junior Kelsi Hobbs was second to Nakano in the 100 Butterfly (59.36) and also earned a win in the 200 Backstroke (2:09.30) and a runner-up placing in the 100 Backstroke (1:00.89).
For the men, Chaney won the 200 Freestyle in 1:41.27 and was followed by Wildcat freshman Brandon Kegley (1:46.95) in second. Chaney led another Davidson 1-2 finish in the 100 Freestyle in 46.76 seconds and was followed by junior Wills Cooper (48.37). Cooper (21.74) and Chaney (21.95) also placed 1-2 in the 50 Freestyle.
Peitz led the 100 Backstroke in 50.87 and the 200 Backstroke in 1:51.21.
Freshman Dylan Ludwick earned victories in the 1000-yard Freestyle (9:42.92) and 500 Free (4:49.33) and junior Drew Onken claimed the 200 Breaststroke and the 400 IM (4:04.72).
Senior women Lauren Kamperman and Meagan Madden both earned first-place finishes. Kamperman led a 1-2 finish in the 200 Freestyle in 1:56.92 and was the runner-up in the 400 IM. Madden (10:53.46) led a Wildcats sweep of the top-three places in the 1000 Freestyle, followed by junior Allison Cottle (10:53.73) and sophomore Megan McLeod (11:13.18). Freshman Anna Blair Bullock won the 500 Freestyle in 5:16.88 and was second to Kamperman in the 200 Freestyle in 1:58.03.
Peitz, Onken, Burquist and Cooper claimed the men's 200 Medley Relay in 1:34.37 and Peitz, Chaney, Kerman and Kegley won the 200 Rreestyle Relay in 1:25.61. The Davidson women's team of Caroline Vrana, Liz Mace, Nakano and DeOrnellas claimed the 200 Freestyle Relay in 1:39.17
The men's divers went unopposed, with Tim Keating earning 179.55 points in the 3-meter dive and following Taylor with 158.87 in the 1-meter dive.
Kaliya Burton-Akright led an unopposed women's diving effort with 253.05 points in the 1-meter dive and 265.65 points in the 3-meter dive.
Gardner-Webb's Drew Ellwanger claimed the lone event for the Runnin' Bulldogs men's team in the 100 Breaststroke (57.59), but Onken placed second in 58.13 and was followed by freshman teammates Spencer Gill (1:01.00) and Drew Gill (1:01.32) in third and fourth, respectively.
Davidson swimming and diving will return to action Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. as the hosts of the CCSA Duals.
