Davidson Men's Soccer Announces 2012 Spring Schedule
1/20/2012 3:08:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Updated Jan. 26 - Charlotte Eagles date change
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's soccer team will host the Charlotte Eagles of the USL PRO league and visit 2011 NCAA national finalist UNC Charlotte as part of a six-match spring exhibition schedule announced Friday.
The Wildcats will also host South Carolina and NC State and participate in the Manchester Cup in Rock Hill, S.C., facing VCU and tournament host Winthrop.
"Spring Training is a significant, valuable opportunity to develop our players with their athleticism, their technical and tactical abilities, their speed of play and decision making, and their presence and confidence," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "As a new group preparing for the Fall 2012 campaign, the spring is where the internal leadership, the chemistry, the spirit, and the style of play is seeded and then harvested."
South Carolina will visit Alumni Stadium Saturday, Mar. 17 to kick-off the spring slate. The Gamecocks hosted Wake Forest in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season, losing in penalty kicks. Davidson earned a 4-1 spring victory over South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. last year.
In the build-up to the Mar. 17 home match vs. South Carolina, coaches Spear and Kevin O'Brien will run an elite camp for high school age players. Click here (PDF) for a brochure with more information.
Davidson will face the Charlotte Eagles Monday, Mar. 19.
NC State will return to Alumni Stadium Saturday, Mar. 24. The Wolfpack and Wildcats battled to a 0-0 draw in a 2011 preseason exhibition match last August.
The 'Cats will compete in two matches on Saturday, Mar. 31 at Winthrop's Manchester Cup tournament, facing VCU at 12:30 p.m. and the host Eagles at 8:45 p.m. The spring season will conclude Wednesday, April 18 at nearby UNC Charlotte.
"I believe that the game is the best teacher, so the exhibition matches are key to elevate the players' impact through live match experiences,” said Spear. “The teams that we will face this spring include two from the powerful ACC, two from the 2011 NCAA Tournament and a pro team. Our very best preparation and performances will be needed to compete, to be excellent and to triumph."
