Men’s Soccer Ranked Eighth in South Region by NSCAA

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – After posting an undefeated opening weekend, the Davidson men's soccer team moved into the NSCAA/Continental Tire South Region Rankings Tuesday, tying with Duke for eighth, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced.

The Wildcats opened the 2011 season in the Rocky Mountains, defeating Air Force, 2-0 Friday and tying No. 19 Denver, 0-0 Sunday.

The long trip, high-altitude and short time in between games proved to be challenges the 'Cats could overcome. Junior midfielder Brian McGue scored early against Air Force and assisted on a late insurance goal to lead Davidson offensively. Senior goalkeeper Chip Sanders made key saves in the second half as Air Force looked to even the game. Senior defender Greg Macnamara led a strong defensive effort against Denver, as the Wildcats allowed just one shot on goal.

Four Southern Conference teams populate the 10-team list. UNCG is fourth, Furman is fifth, and College of Charleston ranks in seventh, just ahead of Davidson and Duke. North Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the nation, leads the region and three other ACC teams on the list.

The Wildcats will return home and host the Davidson adidas Classic Friday and Sunday at Alumni Stadium, with games against Detroit and Gardner-Webb, respectively. Both matches will start at 7 p.m., or shortly after, depending on the conclusion of the Appalachian State matches against Gardner-Webb (Friday) and Detroit (Sunday), which are scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
