DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team will honor their late former head coach Jeff Frank with the playing of the third annual Jeff Frank Invitational this weekend, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, at the Covington Tennis Courts on the campus of Davidson College.
Joining Davidson at the Frank Invitational will be Charlotte, Campbell and Appalachian State with the first day of play starting on Friday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. The invitational will be a flighted individual format with eight singles flights and four doubles flights.
Davidson has had a excellent start to its 2011 Fall season. Last weekend Calum Gee took home the Division III Singles Title at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, while Chris Mark reached the quarterfinals of his respective singles draw. To open the season, the doubles duo of Gee and Joe Schafer earned the doubles title at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, while Kevin Moore reached the finals in his singles draw at the Tennessee Invite.
Frank was one of the most successful coaches in Davidson sports and the head coach for the men's tennis program for 34 years. The school's all-time winningest coach in any sport, Frank concluded his coaching career with a 541-319-1 record. His Wildcat teams posted winning records in 29 of his 33 seasons, and he led the 'Cats to at least 10 victories each year.
The legendary coach was a 1966 graduate of Davidson and a four-year member of the tennis squad, while breaking into the ranks of coaching by coaching the Wildcat freshman team.
