BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Davidson men's soccer team was once again undeterred by an extended lightning delay on the road, as Greg Macnamara's penalty kick goal in the 16th minute and a strong defensive effort was all the Wildcats needed to defeat Campbell, 1-0 Wednesday night in Eakes Athletic Complex.
Davidson improved to 4-2-1 on the season and earned its fifth shutout in seven games, as senior goalkeeper Chip Sanders made five saves. Big South member Campbell fell to 3-3-1
“It was an important win for us and I am proud of how our guys bounced back from our previous loss on the road,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “They pulled together with a cohesive effort, despite a long road trip, to earn a gritty road victory.”
Macnamara, a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award candidate, was awarded a penalty kick, after a foul in the box, which he converted for his first goal of the season and the third of his career. Shortly after, the game was delayed for one hour, 47 minutes.
Play was even through the first half as shots were even at four apiece, and the 'Cats had a couple opportunities to extend the lead in the second half. In the 62nd minute, sophomore Jake Keator had a shot go off the post, and freshman Max Riehemann tried to pad the lead in the 82nd minute, but goalkeeper Ryan Amons made a tremendous save to keep it out of the net.
Amons finished with four saves.
Campbell turned up the pressure in the second half, but seniors Dennis Shannon, Allen Page and Hunter Hayes, as well as sophomore Coleman O'Neill played solid defense for Davidson to prevent quality chances. Sanders made four saves in the half.
Mitchell Cardenas generated the most offensive pressure for the Camels and he led Campbell with five shots, two of which were on goal.
“Campbell is a good team and we have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Steve Armas and their program,” said Spear. “They play a nice brand of soccer, and defending a dynamic player like Cardenas was a challenge for us tonight.”
Davidson will continue their road swing and open their conference slate Sunday at Georgia Southern before facing ACC foe Wake Forest Wednesday, Sept. 28. They return to Alumni Stadium to face Duke Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
Notes: Davidson is now 2-0 this season in games delayed by lightning, as the win over Campbell was their second road shutout win that featured a lightning delay … the 'Cats defeated Air Force, 2-0 in their season opener after that game was delayed by lightning … Macnamara's three career goals are not garbage goals, as his first was a game-winner over UNCG, his second was the game-tying goal at No. 13 UC Santa Barbara, and tonight's was also a game-winner … Davidson remained ranked ninth in the NSCAA South Region in this week's poll.
