KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Led by the trio of Joe Schafer, Calum Gee and Kevin Moore, the Davidson men's tennis team had an excellent start to their 2011 Fall season as they opened up at The Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas, and at the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn., over the weekend.
The duo of Schafer and Gee teamed up in doubles action in the tournament in Midland, Texas, and a captured the doubles title, while Moore reached the finals in the Volunteer Singles bracket at the Tenn. Invite.
Schafer and Gee started their weekend off with an 8-6 win over a pair from the host school Texas Christian. Then on Saturday, the Wildcat duo upset the second-seeded and 18th ranked doubles team in the country from New Mexico to reach the finals. They returned to the courts on Sunday and continued their winning ways with a strong 8-6 win to earn their first doubles title of the Fall season.
Moore led a group of Wildcats at the Tennessee Invite as he opened his Fall season with a 6-1, 6-2 singles win over SoCon-foe Chattanooga. The junior then earned a come-from-behind three-set match, scoring a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 win to reach the semifinals. He again played another three-setter and reached the finals with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 win over Vasily Eremeev of Tenn. Tech. Moore's solid weekend would end there as his winning stretch in three-set matches was halted in the finals as he dropped a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 decision.
Freshman Nicky Kunz had a nice collegiate Fall debut as he reached the consolation finals in the White Singles bracket. After falling in his first match of the day (6-2, 7-6), the first-year Wildcat netted a 6-3, 6-0 win in the semifinals on the consolation side to earn a spot in the finals. Kunz played tough, but fell to a player from Chattanooga in the finals, 6-4, 6-4.
Chris Mark and Ethan Kallick each competed in the Orange Singles bracket over the weekend. Mark opened his junior Fall season with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Nik Shroeder of Eastern Kentucky, but saw his run in the main bracket end with a three-set defeat, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, to host Tennessee.
After dropping a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 decision to start his weekend, Kallick regrouped in his first consolation singles match with a straight set 6-3, 6-2 win. He advanced to the final eight on a bye and continued to play strong, getting a 6-3, 6-1 win to reach the consolation semifinals. Kallick's weekend ended though there with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat.
Kallick and Moore, along with Mark and Kunz also competed in the doubles brackets during the weekend.
Rounding out the Wildcats who competed at the Tennessee Invite was Robert Lightbourn and Connor Evins. Like Mark, Lightbourn started his weekend with a win, taking a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Marc Pretorius of Xavier. His main draw run came to an end after he suffered a 6-3, 6-1 defeat in the second round.
Davidson continues its Fall season with a trip to Athens, Ga., where it plays on the campus of Georgia at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, Sept. 23-25.
