DAVIDSON, N.C. — After three winning weekends on the road, the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team will look to continue that trend when they open up their home season and host Coastal Carolina, N.C. A&T and Norfolk State in the 2011 Wildcat Classic Friday and Saturday at Belk Arena.
Davidson (7-3) opens tournament play against Coastal Carolina (4-7) at 7 p.m. Friday after the first neutral-site match between N.C. A&T (0-10) and Norfolk State (1-5) at 4:30 p.m.
Saturday features four games at Belk Arena, including the Wildcats' matches against N.C. A&T (12 p.m.) and Norfolk State (5 p.m.). Norfolk State and Coastal Carolina will battle in the first match of the day at 10 a.m., and Coastal Carolina returns to take on N.C. A&T later in the day at 3 p.m.
The Wildcats have spent the last three weekends on the road, going 2-1 at both the Winthrop Invitational, the University of South Carolina Invitational and the High Point Invitational, and defeating NC Central, 3-0, in a single match in Durham on August 30. Davidson has wins against Mercer (3-0), UNC Wilmington (3-2), UNC Asheville (3-0), Gardner-Webb (3-0), High Point (3-0), Wright State (3-0) and NC Central.
Davidson is led by sophomore outside hitter Caroline Brown, who was named SoCon Player of the Week on September 6 and leads the conference with 4.69 per set, which ranks 13th nationally. Brown is also eighth in the SoCon in aces (0.34/set). Junior setter Ariel Ley is second in the league with 10.97 assists per set, and the 'Cats have a pair of middle hitters ranked in the top 10 in hitting percentage in sophomore Tindall Sewell (3rd, .412) and Madison Benedict (7th, .338). Junior libero Molly Crenshaw ranks fifth in the SoCon in digs (4.37/set).
The Wildcat Classic will be Davidson's final tune-up before Southern Conference play opens on September 22, when the 'Cats host Furman at 7 p.m.
