GREENSBORO, N.C. – Needing to place in the Top 20 in a one-round qualifying tournament Wednesday at Forest Oaks Country Club, Davidson freshman Richard Fountain fired a four-under-par 68 to tie for first and advance to the 51st North Carolina Amateur Championship.
The championship tournament will take place June 16-19 on the Farm Course at Greensboro Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
Fountain, a Raleigh, N.C. native representing his home Carolina Country Club, birdied four holes on the front-nine and carded an eagle on the par-5 11th hole to go to six-under, but carded a bogey and double bogey on the 14th and 15th holes, respectively, before birdieing the 16th.
He placed in a tie at 68 with Greg Earnhardt of Greensboro, N.C.
In April, Fountain became the first Davidson golfer since 1973 to win individual medalist honors at the Southern Conference Championship. He advanced to the NCAA Virginia Tech Regional tournament May 19-21.
