GREENSBORO, N.C. – Richard Fountain, a rising sophomore at Davidson, placed in a four-way tie for second place at the 51st North Carolina Amateur Championship on the Greensboro Country Club's Farm Course Sunday after firing a final-round three-under-par 69 to finish at 11-under par.
Fountain (Raleigh, N.C.) completed the four-round tournament at 277 (69-71-68-69), three strokes behind tournament champion Harold Varner (274, -14), a rising senior at East Carolina, who fired a final-round 66.
Ryan Bell, Adam Stephenson and Bruce Woodall all tied Fountain at 11-under.
Fountain, the reigning Southern Conference individual medalist and NCAA regional qualifier, has seen plenty of success competing on his own in North Carolina tournaments over summer. Needing to place in the Top 20 in a one-round qualifying tournament for the North Carolina Amateur Championship June 1 at Forest Oaks Country Club, he fired a four-under-par 68 to tie for first and earn a place in the field. He then placed eighth at the Carolinas PGA North Carolina Open June 9 at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C.
