Women's Basketball Holds Annual End of the Year Banquet

DAVIDSON, N.C. — First-year head coach Michele Savage and the Davidson women's basketball team recently held their annual end of the year banquet at the Nancy Blackwell House on the campus of Davidson College.
Savage honored her two senior co-captains, Chloe Woodington and Ashley Lax. The pair received the captains awards as well as their senior gifts and were each tabbed wth the Inspirational Award. They had both battled injuries through their careers, with Woodington missing all of her first two years, while Lax battled through her senior year, but they both had outstanding senior campaigns.
Lax etched her name in the Wildcat 1,000-point record book, finishing with 1,001 points to become the 14th player in program history to accomplish the feat. She was awarded with her 1,000-point ball at the banquet.
The senior also ended her career in the top-15 in three-point field goals made (2nd all-time) and attempted, field goals attempted and free throw percentage.
Woodington set career bests in nearly every category during her senior season, including starting 14 of 30 games. One of her highlights was her return trip back home to San Antonio where she combined for 11 points, a team-best eight assists and two boards in vs. North Texas and UTSA in helping the 'Cats take home the UTSA Thanksgiving Tournament Title. She tallied nine of those points and a career-high five assists in leading the 'Cats to a 70-55 win vs. North Texas.
Savage thanked the seniors for their leadership and helping make it a memorable first-year as a head coach.
Sophomore Sophia Aleksandravicius was honored with team MVP after her outstanding second year with the Wildcats. The 6-foot-4 forward led the team in scoring (16.5), rebounding (9.0), blocks (single-season record 95) and free throw percentage (.826).
Earlier, Aleksandravicius was named to both the Southern Conference Coaches and Media First Teams, and was a first-team all-state pick. She rewrote the Wildcat record books this year in several categories. The sophomore set the single-game (7), single-season (95) and career (144) records in blocks, while also setting the single-season mark in made field goals (192) and free throws (123). Her 511 points were the most scored in a single-season, surpassing Jennifer O'Brien's 488 total set in the 1999-00 season.
Her 95 blocks on the season and 3.1 average per game ranked first in the SoCon and ninth nationally overall.
Junior Kristen Johnsen was given the Most Improved Player award after recording career
highs in points at 8.8 per game and rebounds, hauling in 5.6 per game. She was tops on the team in shooting, draining 52.4 percent of her shots, which placed her third in the SoCon.
The junior hit the double-digit mark in points 12 times and registered four games with 10-plus rebounds. She also recorded three double-doubles this year to give her five for her career.
Davidson closed the season 14-17 overall and 8-12 in the Southern Conference during coach Savage's first season. The 'Cats scored a 69-53 win in the first round of the league tournament, the program's first win since 2007, and nearly knocked off No. 1-seeded Appalachian State in the quarterfinals, before eventually falling 73-63.
