DAVIDSON, N.C. — Following up his strong freshman campaign last year, sophomore Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) was honored again as he was named to the All-Southern Conference Second Team in men's tennis, announced today by the league office. Postseason balloting was conducted by the league's head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
An All-SoCon Freshman Team member last year, Schafer earned a spot on the second team at the No. 1 singles position as the team's selections were awarded based on position. It marks the second year in a row a Wildcat has garnered a spot on the second team, with Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) being named last year at the No. 5 slot.
The sophomore represented Davidson at the No. 1 spot the majority of the season, going a team-best 11-12 on the year. Schafer picked up nine of his 11 wins at the top singles position, with four of his five league wins coming there as well.
Schafer started the year strong, rattling off wins in five of his first even singles matches. One of those wins included a three-set win (6-3, 2-6, 6-2) over Derek DiFazio of the No. 53 Clemson Tigers. The sophomore became very accustomed to three-set matches throughout the year, playing in 12 of them. He picked up six wins when going the distance and three of them were vs. league foes Samford, Wofford and Furman.
Schafer also saw action at the No. 2 singles spot five times during the year, going 2-3 in those matches, including a two-set defeat at No. 37 Wake Forest.
For his first two years so far, Schafer has totaled 21 singles wins and picked up nine wins against league opponents.
Besides his outstanding singles play, the sophomore was also part of a very strong doubles team for Davidson at No. 1 with Gee. The duo went 9-10 at the top doubles spot and had a 5-4 mark vs. the SoCon. One of their defeats came against a nationally ranked Elon doubles team as they lost just 8-6. The duo finished strong on the season, winning five of their last six doubles matches, all coming at the No. 1 position.
For his two-year career, Schafer has tallied 22 doubles wins, with 13 of them coming as a freshman last year.
Schafer and his teammates will look to make some noise in the league tournament, Apr. 20-23, as they open up the first round against Wofford on Wednesday. Davidson (6-17, 2-8 SoCon), seeded 10th, was in nearly ever SoCon match this year, with six of their 10 matches going down to a final singles match to determine the overall team match.
