Lewis Gruber of Georgia Southern also shot an even-72 to remain tied with Fountain at 140. Both shot four-under 68s in the first round. Casey O'Toole of Samford shot a 69 on the first day and followed with a one-under 71 to make it a three-way tie for first place. Three are tied for fourth place, two strokes back at 142.
Rusty Boyd is the last individual medalist from Davidson, winning in 1973. Alex Knoll came the closest to ending the 'Cats' medalist drought in 2007, finishing as the runner-up.
Freshman Sam Echikson led the Wildcats for the day with a two-under-par 70 to move into a tie for 16th place at 146. The 'Cats were as high as third on the leaderboard after completing the front-nine, but the back-nine proved challenging for all teams, and the 'Cats struggled in particular on the last three holes. Junior Jackson Taylor (153) fired a 78, senior Bobby Urso (155) a 79 and John Skeadas (155) an 81.
All five Chattanooga golfers shot within one stroke of par in round two to place the Mocs four shots clear of the field. Chattanooga is followed in the team standings by Georgia Southern (579) and Samford (580). College of Charleston (583) is in fifth place, followed by Wofford (584), Elon (590) and Western Carolina (590). Davidson (592) is in ninth position, while Appalachian State (599) and Furman (601) are in 10th and 11th, respectively.
Wofford freshman Chandler Brazeal and UNCG junior Will Almand posted the day's lowest scores at three-under par 69.
UNCG was the only team to break par in round two, pulling two shots closer to Chattanooga with a two-under par 286. The Spartans are in the fourth spot with one round to play.
The third and final round tees off at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Fans unable to attend the tournament, which is open to the public free of charge, can follow the action at http://golfstatresults.com/public/index.cfm?tournament_id=2204.
This is the fifth-straight year the Country Club of South Carolina has hosted the event. Furman is the defending champion at the par 72, 7,062-yard course.
The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional, which will take place May 19-21, while the individual medalist will also earn an automatic regional qualification.
Chattanooga entered the event as the top-rated SoCon team in 2011, carrying a No. 33 national rating from Golfstat.
The Wildcats are five-time SoCon Champions, but have not won since claiming three-straight titles from 1966-1968 and are coming off a 10th-place finish last season.
