CHARLESTON, S.C. – Former Davidson men's soccer midfielder Alex Caskey signed with the defending USL PRO league champion Charleston Battery Tuesday, the team announced.
Caskey impressed the Battery staff during final player trials in February and saw significant action in each match of the Carolina Challenge Cup. The Battery went 1-1-1 against MLS teams to place second in the tournament after dropping a 2-1 decision to D.C. United, but fought back with a win against Toronto FC and a draw against the Chicago Fire.
“I'm really excited to join the Battery,” said Caskey. “Playing professional soccer is something I have worked towards my entire life, so it's a dream come true. Playing at Davidson helped me reach this point as we played strong competition, and I was able to be a team captain and develop in a leadership role. I'd like to thank the coaching staff for developing me over my four years.”
In addition to Caskey, the Battery also signed JC Mack, who played for the Chicago Fire PDL's and Super 20's.
“Alex and JC have both earned a spot on our roster and both players have tremendous potential to move up the professional ladder,” Charleston Battery head coach and general manager Mike Anhaeuser commented. “Alex will add depth to our midfield and JC brings a dangerous player on the wing or up front.”
A two-year team captain at Davidson, Caskey was a three-time All-Southern Conference first team selection and a two-time NSCAA All-South Region second-team selection. He finished his Davidson career following the 2010 season with 19 goals and 15 assists for 53 points and did not miss a single match, starting all 76.
“The Davidson soccer family is really pumped for Alex, and his jump to professional soccer,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “He has been a very special player for our program, and we will follow his progress with pride and passion.
“The Battery have a wonderful tradition of winning and also in developing players for potential jumps to Major League Soccer. Plus, Blackbaud Stadium is awesome.”
Blackbaud Stadium, the home of the Battery, was the site of the Southern Conference Championship from 2003-2005. Davidson played in the SoCon finals each year and was victorious in 2003.
The Charleston Battery kicks off the 2011 USL PRO season on Saturday, April 9 with a 7:30 p.m. match versus the Charlotte Eagles at Blackbaud Stadium.
Caskey was originally drafted by Seattle Sounders FC, who took him 47th overall in the third round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft in January.
