Elswick and Drutchas Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Seniors Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Callan Elswick (Locust Grove, Va.) of the Davidson women's soccer team each were awarded with the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for the fall season as announced by the NCAA today.
They are two of only 29 student-athletes for fall sports and two of 174 total postgrads (87 men / 87 women) who are awarded a scholarship based on excelling academically and athletically, and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
Both seniors excelled in the classroom as well as on the field for the Wildcat women's soccer team. Drutchas and Elswick were both named the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District III Teams this past fall, earning first and second team honors, respectively. For Elswick, it was the second year in a row she was named to one of the three teams, picking up third team honors as a junior in 2009.
The duo were also named to the All-Southern Conference Academic Team for the third straight year in the fall.
Drutchas, a philosophy major who carries a 3.98 GPA, was a Rhodes Scholar finalist, while Elswick, majoring in a center for interdisciplinary studies with a 3.88 GPA, was named to the Lowe's Senior CLASS All-Senior All-America First Team after being one of 10 finalists for the award. She was a candidate of 30 division I women's soccer players overall picked at the beginning of the season for the award.
The pair were co-captains this year for the soccer team. Drutchas, a midfield, had a breakout senior campaign. She led the team with a career-high 15 points on three goals and a personal-best nine assists. Her nine assists ranked second in the SoCon and were tied for the second-most in a Wildcat single season.
In addition to leading the team in points, goals and assists, Drutchas also had a team-high 44 shots, putting 25 of those on goal, picked up a pair of game-winning goals and hit both of Davidson's penalty kicks during the season.
Elswick also had a highly-successful season on the field. The senior started all 16 games this year and added her fifth career goal in a 2-0 win over Winthrop.
During her four-year career, she played in 75 games and started 36 of them. She finished with five goals and five assists for 15 points.
Plans after graduation from Davidson in May include going to medical school for Elswick, while Drutchas will attend law school.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.
The one-time grants of $7,500 each are awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. Each sports season (fall, winter and spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants.
