DAVIDSON, N.C. — Hoping to close out its seven-match homestand in winning style, Davidson was unable to upset No. 66 Winthrop on the tennis courts, falling 7-0 to the Eagles in women's tennis at the Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center on Wednesday evening.
Davidson fell to 3-4 on the year, while Winthrop, ranked No. 65 to start the season, evened its record at 5-5.
Both teams battled it out in the doubles action as the first two spots went down to the wire. Nisha Crouser and Stephani Synn lost 8-6, and Alison Rauh and Brites Moniz-Soares fell 8-7. The Eagles then sweep the doubles when they took the third position as well.
For the second straight match, Davidson battled hard in singles action, but came up short again as Winthrop took all six matches. The Wildcats also dropped all six singles matches to Liberty last time out.
Senior Samantha Galainena had a close match, falling to Lisa Wilkinson 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5, while Romina Clemente suffered a 6-2, 7-5 setback at No. 6.
Rauh also kept things close early in her singles match before taking a 6-4, 6-3 setback to Elizaveta Zaytseva at No. 2.
The 'Cats hit the road for the first time, going to the Northeast to play Brown on Saturday at 11 a.m. and then Boston on Sunday at 10 a.m.
