
Assistant M. Tennis Coach Ricky Gonzalez Playing in Davis Cup

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson College will be represented this weekend when asisstant men's tennis coach Ricky Gonzalez plays with the Puerto Rico Davis Cup team in a match against Paraguay on Friday, Mar. 5.
Gonzalez will be looking to improve on his 13-4 career record in Davis Cup matches since he first joined the team in 2004. A standout player at Georgia in college, Gonzalez is 8-2 in singles play and 5-2 in doubles action. This year, Gonzalez is a perfect 5-0 combined in both singles (3-0) and doubles (2-0).
Both countries have faced each other once all-time with Paraguay winning 4-1 back in 1994.
Puerto Rico is in the Americas Zone Group II after being promoted when it finished tops in Americas Zone Group III. It's best performance in the Davis Cup was in 1993, when it reached the final round of Americas Zone Group II.
The Davis Cup began in 1900 as a competition between USA and Great Britain. It's now the world's largest annual international team competition in sport, with 125 nations competing in 2010.
