Men Continue to Lead, Women, Second after Day Two at CCSA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. -- With individual titles for sophomore Drew Onken and juniors Curtis Chaney and Geoffrey Peitz, in CCSA and school-record NCAA B-cut times, the Wildcat men, who also won the 800 freestyle relay, continue to lead the field after the second full day of competition at the CCSA Championships.
Senior Emily Castle did the same to win the 100 fly and classmate Lindsey Martin swam a runner-up NCAA B-cut time in the 100 free, the Wildcats' fifth of the day, as the Davidson women remain in second behind Florida Gulf Coast after a second full day of competition at the Gabrielson Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.
Onken broke his own school and CCSA record with a winning time of 3:49.37 in the 400 IM, Davidson's first individual title of the day and his second of the championship. Chaney also broke his league and school records from the 2009 CCSA Championships with a time of 1:37.47 in the 200 free to win his first title of the league championships, and Peitz picked up his second individual title of the meet with a time of 48.02 in the 100 back, also breaking his own league and school record in the process.
The race for the championship has tightened up on the men's side, as the Wildcats lead the College of Charleston just 570-566 going into the final day. Gardner-Webb (522) is in third, followed by VMI (236), Howard (175) and Florida A&M (57).
Florida Gulf Coast has opened a 586.5-398 lead over the Wildcat women, who continue to lead Gardner-Webb (314.5) and Georgia Southern (309). North Florida (193), Liberty (184), Charleston (150), Campbell (130), Radford (91), Howard (82), VMI (47) and NC A&T (40) round out the field.
College of Charleston gained ground on the disqualified Wildcat men with a win in the 200 medley relay to start the second day of competition, before the Davidson women's team of sophomore Kelsi Hobbs, senior Ineke Stegger, Castle and Martin finished second in school-record time of 1:43.67.
In the first individual event of the day, Onken burned by the field as the only swimmer to go under four minutes with a winning time of 3:49.37 in the 400 IM, even faster than his prelim-winning 3:53.29. Senior Ben Lucas finished second for the 'Cats with a time of 4:05.13, and freshman Drew Gustavson (ninth, 4:11.41) and sophomore Marcus Carson (11th, 4:30.70) competed in the consolation final. Junior Lauren Kamperman finished eighth on the women's side with a time of 4:35.42, and sophomore Lillie Seifart was 16th in the consolation final with a time of 4:38.58.
Juniors Joe Burquist and David Kerman finished fourth and fifth in the 100 fly with times of 49.90 and 50.03, respectively, both faster than their morning swims, before Castle broke the record twice in the event on the women's side. She smashed her record from the 2009 championships with a time of 54.47 to win the morning's prelim and shaved off a hundreth in the nightcap to win the title for a third straight year. Sophomore Kelsi Hobbs (fourth, 56.69) and freshman Liz Mace (sixth, 57.06) also swam in the championship final, and sophomore Jean DeOrnellas finished 10th in the consolation heat (57.13).
Chaney broke his own CCSA championship record from the 2009 season with a winning time of 1:37.47 in the 200 free, with sophomore Wills Cooper (sixth, 1:43.14) and senior Bryan Droll (eighth, 1:44.09) also in the championship heat. Freshman Quinn Waggoner was 10th in the consolation heat with a time of 1:44.21. Martin finished in the runner-up spot on the women's side with a time of 1:48.91, her second NCAA B-cut of the meet, and classmate Jessica Delgehausen was fourth with a time of 1:52.25.
Freshman Drew Glenn competed in the championship heat of the 100 breast, finishing eighth with a time of 59.63, and Lucas won the consolation heat with a time of 59.50. Sophomore Ben Wilde finished 14th in the consolation heat with a time of 1:02.47. Stegger (fifth, 1:05.61) and freshman Caroline Vrana (1:05.87) competed in the championship heat for the Wildcat women.
Peitz followed with his second win and NCAA B-cut time of 48.02 in the 100 back, setting the record for the second time of the day, and Burquist finished seventh in 53.02. Senior Tennant Brastow was 10th in the consolation final with a time of 53.57, and Hobbs finished eighth for the Wildcat women in the championship heat with a time of 57.61.
In the diving events, freshman Brian McRae finished second on the 1-meter board with a score of 251.75, while sophomore Tim Keating was fifth with a score of 149.60. Junior Nick Taylor placed seventh with a score of 116.35.
The Davidson men finished the day off strong with a win in the 800 freestyle relay, breaking their own school and CCSA record from the 2009 championships, as Onken, Kerman, Cooper and Chaney finished with a time of 6:45.15. Senior Anna Stringfield, Kamperman, DeOrnellas and Delgehausen finished sixth for the women with a time of 7:31.94.
On the final day of competition, the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1650 freestyle and women's 3-meter diving will be contested, in addition to the 400 freestyle relay. Prelims are once again at 10 a.m. and the Championships will be decided in the 6 p.m. finals.
