Men Lead, Women Second After Day One of CCSA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. — Behind a pair of relay wins and individual titles from junior Geoffrey Peitz and senior Bryan Droll the Wildcat men's swimming and diving team are in first place at the end of the first day of competition at the 2011 CCSA Championships. With a title for senior Lindsey Martin and a win in the 200 freestyle relay, the Wildcat women are in second, as competition concluded at the Gabrielson Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia Thursday night.
The Wildcat men, who won both the 200 freestyle and 400 medley in school and CCSA record, NCAA B-cut times, are in first with 266 points, ahead of College of Charleston (232) and Gardner-Webb (222). VMI (108), Howard (71) and Florida A&M (27) complete the men's field.
Peitz, who led off the 200 freestyle relay and set a new school record with his 100 back split in the 400 medley relay, also won the 200 IM with an NCAA B-cut, school-record time of 1:47.53. Droll won the 50 free and set a new school and CCSA record with his prelim time of 20.35, and sophomore Drew Onken finished second in the 200 IM with the Wildcats' fifth NCAA B-cut time of the day.
Led by Martin, the Davidson women are second with 178 points, behind Florida Gulf Coast (256.5). Gardner-Webb is in third with 142.5 points, followed by Georgia Southern (115), North Florida (104), Liberty (99), Campbell (76), Charleston (63), Radford (61), Howard (36), VMI (33) and NC A&T (26).
Despite a second-place finish in the prelim, Martin, who anchored the Wildcats' 200 free relay with a split of 22.20, roared back in the evening session to win the 50 free with a time of 22.57, tying her school and CCSA record from a season ago.
All told, the Wildcats earned 13 swims in the championship final and five in the consolation final in the morning's prelim sessions.
With the “A” relays contested in the evening session, the Wildcat men's relay team of Peitz, sophomore Wills Cooper, junior David Kerman and Droll kicked off the night in winning fashion, swimming an NCAA B-cut and setting new school and CCSA records with a time of 1:21.21 in the 200 freestyle relay for Davidson's first title at the 2011 Championship.
The Wildcat women kept the winning going, with the relay team of senior Emily Castle, sophomore Jean DeOrnellas, senior Anna Stringfield and Martin shattering the CCSA and school record as well with a winning time of 1:33.19.
In the 500 free, junior Curtis Chaney and freshman Ethan Levinson made it back to the finals, finishing second and third in the morning's prelim with times of 4:36.90 and 4:37.85, respectively. Chaney finished in the same spot in the evening session with a time of 4:32.69, while Levinson finished fifth in 4:40.79. Freshman Will Fox qualified for the consolation final with a 10th-place time of 4:44.05 in the prelim and finished 13th in the evening session with a time of 4:45.04.
On the women's side, senior Jessica Delgehausen finished in sixth place with a time of 4:59.10 in the morning's prelim to advance to the championship final, where she was seventh with a time of 4:59.19.
Onken won the 200 IM prelim with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:48.44, followed immediately by Peitz and his NCAA B-cut time of 1:48.74. The duo went even faster at night, as Peitz won Wildcats' first individual title with a time of 1:47.53 ahead of Onken's 1:48.16. Freshman Thomas Bigham also advanced to the championship final, finishing seventh with a time of 1:55.13 in the prelims and seventh in the evening session behind a time of 1:55.68. Classmate Drew Glenn earned a swim in the consolation final with a 12th-place time of 1:58.49, and he finished in the same spot with a time of 1:57.80 in the final.
For the Wildcat women, junior Lauren Kamperman and Stringfield finished fourth (2:06.06) and fifth (2:06.69) in the morning's prelims in the 200 IM to move into the championship heat, where Stringfield was the 'Cats' top finisher with a fifth-place time of 2:05.59. Kamperman finished eighth in the championship heat with a time of 2:06.49, and senior Ineke Stegger was second in the consolation final with a time of 2:08.60, after qualifying 10th with a time of 2:08.11.
CCSA record-holder in the event, Droll won the both the 50 free prelim (20.35) and the championship heat (20.46), nabbing the Wildcats' second individual title of the day while setting a new school and CCSA record with his morning swim. Cooper, who qualified second with a time of 20.76, went 20.94 at night to finish in third place. Kerman finished fifth in the final with a time of 21.13 after finishing fourth in 20.97 in the morning. Sophomore Ben Wilde finished 12th in 21.79 in the prelims to move into the consolation final, where he was 16th with a time of 22.24.
After finishing second with a time of 23.06 in the 50 free prelim, Martin won the final, tying her CCSA and school record with an NCAA B-cut time of 22.57. Castle finished third in the championship heat with a time of 23.42, after swimming a third-place time of 23.28 in the prelim. DeOrnellas, who was 10th with a time of 24.18 in the prelims, finished 15th in the consolation final with a time of 24.33.
The Wildcat men finished the day with their second relay win, as Peitz, Onken, junior Joe Burquist and Droll won the 400 medley relay with another NCAA B-cut, school and CCSA record-setting time of 3:16.68.
Davidson's women's 400 medley relay team of sophomore Kelsi Hobbs, Stegger, Castle and Martin also finished in school-record time, finishing second in 3:45.31.
In the diving events, freshman Kaliya Burton-Akright finished second on the 1-meter board with a score of 236.30, and junior Jessica Ardecky was 12th with a score of 185.75. Freshman Brian McRae finished second on the 3-meter board with a score of 209.80, while sophomore Tim Keating was sixth (134.90) and junior Nick Taylor was seventh (115.55).
The Wildcats return to action with prelims at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Friday's events include the 200 medley and the 800 freestyle relays, along with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and men's 1-meter diving. Finals will again be contested at 6 p.m. Prelim Results will be posted here as soon as they become available.
