
Wildcats Begin Quest for 2011 CCSA Championship Thursday

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Just a season removed from the first-ever men's team championship and senior Lindsey Martin's charge toward the first individual NCAA appearance in program history, the Davidson Wildcats will begin their quest for the 2011 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championship Thursday at the Gabrielson Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.
Thursday features the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays, in addition to the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, women's 1-meter diving and men's 3-meter diving.
Friday's events include the 200 medley and the 800 freestyle relays, along with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and men's 1-meter diving.
On the final day of competition, the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1650 freestyle and women's 3-meter diving will be contested, in addition to the 400 freestyle relay, as the Championships are decided Saturday.
The three-day competition will feature a prelim session each morning at 10 a.m. with swimmers advancing to the 6 p.m. evening final session. Men's races will follow women's races in each event, and the “B” relays will swim in the prelim sessions and the “A” relays will be contested at night. The evening session will include a consolation and championship final in each event, except the 1,650 freestyle and the diving events.
Live Championship Coverage
The CCSA Championships will once again be video streamed live on the Big South Network, presented by State Farm, with play-by-play provided by Mark Bryant of the Big South Conference office. All three days of the Championship can be purchased for $7.95, while a single day can be viewed for $4.95. Purchase the video streaming packages at BigSouthSports.com and choose “upcoming live events” from the multimedia menu.
In addition to the video stream, the CCSA will provide free live results through the HyTek manager system and will be live tweeting on @TheCCSA.
Tickets and Parking
Tickets can be purchased at the door beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday morning. A three-day pass is available for purchase for $25, a two-day pass for $18 or a single-day pass for $10. Children under 5 will be admitted for free. Payment must be check or cash.
Staff, officials and spectator parking is located in the East Campus Deck (E04), east of the Ramsey Center. Parking is $5 on Thursday and Friday, and free on Saturday in both E04 and the lot to the south.
Wildcat CCSA Record Holders
Martin set the CCSA and Championship record in both the 50 (:22.57) and 100 (:49.55) freestyles last season, which propelled her to the school's first-ever NCAA Championship appearance. Classmate Emily Castle holds the CCSA and Championship record in the 100 fly with a time of :54.62 from the 2009 CCSAs, and the Wildcat women hold the 200 (1:33.37, 2009) and 400 (2010, 3:23.09) freestyle relay record.
Junior Curtis Chaney holds the CCSA and Championship record in both the 200 free (1:37.72) and 500 free (4:26.89) from the 2009 CCSA Championships. Classmate Geoff Peitz holds the CCSA and Championship record in the 100 back (:50.06) from the 2010 CCSAs, while sophomore Drew Onken set the CCSA record in the 400 IM (3:49.79) at the Last Chance Meet in Athens on Feb. 27, 2010 and the Championship record (3:51.93) in the event at last year's championships. The Wildcat men hold all five of the relay records, and set the 200 (1:30.91) and 400 (3:19.62) medley relays records at last season's Championships.
Wildcats in the CCSA Rankings
Last year's Most Outstanding Swimmer, Martin leads the conference in the 50 (:22.98), 100 (:49.54) and 200 (1:49.89) freestyles heading into the conference championships. Castle is the only other Wildcat with a conference-best time, leading all swimmers in the 100 fly this season with a time of :55.18. She also ranks third in the 50 free (:23.82), and sophomore Jean DeOrnellas is fifth (:24.40) in the 50 and fourth in the 100 (:52.14).
Senior Anna Stringfield is ranked near the top of the conference in several events and is another swimmer poised to make an impact for Davidson. She ranks fifth in the 100 (:52.18), second in the 200 (1:51.24), second in the 200 back ¬and second in the 400 IM (4:28.28).¬
Senior Bryan Droll leads the CCSA in the 50 free with a time of :21.17, followed immediately by teammates Wills Cooper (:21.28) and Peitz (:21.47). Junior David Kerman is ranked fifth in the event (:21.57), giving the Wildcat lots of depth in the sprints. Cooper also leads the conference in the 100 free with a time of :46.33, followed by Peitz (second, :47.72) and Onken (fourth, :46.96). Chaney has the third-best time of the season in the 200 free (1:43.00), and Cooper is fifth with a time of 1:43.81 in the event.
Onken ranks second in both the 500 (4:38.94) and 1000 freestyles (9:51.26), but excels at the breaststroke, leading the conference in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.36) and ranking second in the 100 breaststroke (:57.52). One of the most versatile Wildcats, he is also the conference leader in the 200 IM (1:52.47), 400 IM (3:59.11) and 200 back (1:52.49), and ranks second in the 200 fly (1:53.63).
Peitz is the final Wildcat leading the conference in an event, swimming the season-best time in both the 100 backstroke (:50.98) and the 100 fly (:50.23).
