Mullen, Zarth Reach Finals at Davidson Open

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior Matt Zarth and senior Tyler Mullen reached the finals of their respective weight classes to lead the Davidson wrestling team Saturday at the Davidson Open in Knobloch Tennis Center.
Zarth (125 pounds) earned a pair of wins by fall at 125 pounds to advance to the semifinals, pinning The Citadel's Steven Cox in 3:35 and Anderson University's Keenan Simmons in 6:32. Zarth then advanced to the finals with a 9-7 decision over Virginia Tech's Matt Peters, but lost a 5-2 decision to Larone Madison.
Mullen (165) earned an 11-1 major decision over Hardy Hendren (VMI) and an 8-5 decision over John Lampe (Chattanooga-Unattached) to reach the semifinals. A 5-2 decision over Kenneth Radford (The Citadel-Unattached) placed him in the finals, but Mike Williams (UNC Pembroke) defeated him 8-1 for the bracket title.
Sophomore Scott Patrick placed third at 184 pounds. He reached the semis with a 5-3 decision over Josh Esparaza (Campbell-Unattached) and a medical forfeit. Shiheem Bryant of UNC Pembroke defeated him 3-2, but Patrick rallied with a 7-1 decision over Jared Holiday (Newberry-Unattached).
Freshman Ben Hartshorn reached the semifinals with a pair of decisions over Michael Akins (Chattanooga-Unattached) Sterling Perry (St. Andrew's), respectively, but was relegated to the consolation bracket with a close 9-7 loss to Duke's Chris Mullen. He lost his final bout by technical fall to Tyler Puckett (Appalachian State-Unattached).
Freshman Kevin Birmingham placed fourth at 149 pounds. He opened the day with a technical fall win over Campbell's Thomas LeBarre in 4:38, but was relegated to the wrestleback bracket with a 9-3 loss to Russell Benner (Appalachian State). Birmingham pinned Kody Getkin (St. Andrew's), but was pinned himself by Kristoff Thomas in the third-place bout.
Freshman Ed Isola went 2-2 at 197 pounds. Sophomore CT Talevi pinned St. Andrew's Caleb Mitcler in 3:24 at 157 pounds. Junior Chris Cirenza earned a major decision at 165 pounds. Freshman Anthony Elias competed at 133 pounds and went 1-2. Freshman Dan Hagemann (149) and junior Ike Crews (184) also competed for Davidson.
Davidson will next host Ohio Northern Sunday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.
