Onken Sets Meet Record on Second Day of Kenyon Invitational

GAMBIER, Ohio – Drew Onken led the Davidson swimming teams with a meet- and pool-record performance in the 400 IM and Curtis Chaney also earned an individual title on the second day of competition at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational Friday night at the Kenyon Aquatics Center.
Onken claimed the 400 IM by a margin over two seconds in 3:53.35. He also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.64. Chaney won the 200-yard freestyle by over two seconds in 1:38.14.
Lauren Kamperman led the way on the women's side, scoring a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.95. She also reached the championship finals in the 400-yard IM, placing sixth in 4:33.88
Meredith Nakano earned a top-five finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.26 and also won the consolation final in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.93.
Other top performances on the men's side included Geoff Peitz placing seventh in the championship final of the 50-yard freestyle 21.11 and Brandon Kegley claiming the win in the consolation final of the 100-yard backstroke in 53.10.
Relays were also contested with Wildcat teams earning three top-five finishes. The Davidson women's 400-yard medley relay team of Kelsi Hobbs, Nakano, Liz Mace and Jean DeOrnellas placed fourth in 3:56.59. The men's 400-yard relay team of Peitz, Onken, Thomas Bigham and Chaney took third in 3:23.52, while the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Peitz, Chaney, David Kerman and Kegley placed fifth in 1:24.32.
The Davidson men are fourth with 295 points and the women are tied for fifth with 197 points through the first two days of competition.
The Wildcats had a strong start to the meet Thursday night, as the men broke the college and conference 800 freestyle relay records and Dylan Ludwick's 1000 split in his mile broke the school record.
Chaney, Ludwick, Ben Stewart-Bates and Onken came in second in the 800 relay with a new Davidson and conference record of 6:42.93. Ludwick finished second with a time of 15:49.19 in the 1000.
The Wildcat women's relay squad of Nakano, Mackenzie Robinson, DeOrnellas and Kamperman finished ninth in the 800 freestyle with a time of 7:43.08.
The meet concludes Saturday.
