DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson senior tri-captain Greg Macnamara was recognized as one of the top student-athletes in the nation Friday as the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America announced his selection to the Capital One Academic All-America third team for men's soccer.
“Academic All-American is an absolutely massive honor, and it fits Greg perfectly,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear, who has now coached five Academic All-Americans. “He is a class act, on and off the field and is as respected a player by his coaches and teammates as I have been fortunate to work with in my 11 seasons.”
Macnamara, a mathematics and economics double major carrying a 3.75 grade point average, has previously drawn Southern Conference Academic All-Conference, Academic Honor Roll and Commissioner's Medal honors. He was named to the Academic All-District second team as a junior and to the first team as a senior ilast month. Macnamara was also one of 30 finalists for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for men's soccer. He will graduate a semester early this month.
The Arlington, Va. native has been one of the top defenders in the Southern Conference and the backbone of a Davidson defense that posted nine shutouts this past season, one shy of the team record of 10 set in 2003. He scored two goals, including the game-winner vs. Campbell, and assisted on the game-tying goal against College of Charleston that allowed Davidson to earn home field advantage for the first round of the SoCon Championship.
As a junior, he was named to the 2010 All-SoCon second team and the SoCon All-Tournament team.
Macnamara is the first member of Davidson's men's soccer team to receive Academic All-America recognition since Charlie Reiter was named to the first team in 2009. Tracy Hankins (1989), Chris Norbet (2001), Soren Johnson (2002) and Mac Wilkie (2006) were Davidson's first four honorees.
“This honor is most important to Greg and to his family, but it is also a treasure celebrated by the program and the Davidson College community,” added Spear.
Senior goalkeeper Brian Holt of Creighton University was chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year. A finance major with a 3.73 G.P.A., Holt is leading second-seeded and second-ranked Creighton (20-2) into the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Cup quarterfinals against South Florida Saturday and currently leads the NCAA with a 0.23 goals against average and .915 save percentage.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
