DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's soccer team was recognized for its academic success during the 2010-11 academic year, earning a place on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America College Team Academic Award list.
The Wildcat men posted a 3.13 team grade point average to earn a place among the 218 men's teams honored across all three NCAA divisions, as well as NAIA and junior college schools. Davidson was one of 159 schools to have both their men's and women's soccer teams honored.
“At Davidson we very much believe in the student-athlete formula,” said head coach Matt Spear, a 1993 graduate of Davidson. “With the excellent academic work our players did at their respective high schools and then their performances in the Davidson classrooms, we could elevate it to scholar-athletes.”
Leading the way academically for the 'Cats was senior captain Greg Macnamara, who was named to the Capital One Academic All-America team.
“I represent other Davidson alumni for how proud we are of the guys, because it retains the integrity of our degree and the reputation of Davidson's academics as it is usually rated the top liberal arts degree for schools that compete in NCAA Division I sports,” said Spear. “The professors here truly crave teaching and mentoring – they care about our student-athletes.”
Davidson closed out the 2011 season with an 8-8-2 overall mark and a 3-2-2 mark in SoCon play. The 'Cats were the only team to defeat eventual National Champion North Carolina in regulation this year.
