SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Davidson senior defender Greg Macnamara and junior midfielder Brian McGue were elected to the 2011 Men's Soccer All-Southern Conference first team, the league office announced Tuesday.
Two of Davidson's three team captains for the season, Macnamara and McGue led the Wildcats defensively and offensively, respectively. Davidson has now had multiple representatives on the all-conference first team in two of the past three seasons, as Alex Caskey and Charlie Reiter were both named to the first team in 2009
“Success can be defined as giving your all, doing your best, making others around you better, relishing competition, and enjoying the process,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “Greg and Brian are perfect examples of these qualities of achievement and leadership.”
Macnamara earned his second all-conference recognition, as he was named to the second team as a junior last season. The Arlington, Va. native anchored Davidson's back line as a center back and led the unit to nine shutouts, just one shy of the team record of 10 set in 2003. Two of the shutouts this season were to ranked opponents in No. 19 Denver and No. 2 North Carolina. Macnamara also chipped in offensively, scoring the game-winning goal against Campbell and assisting on the game-tying goal against College of Charleston that allowed the 'Cats to host their SoCon quarterfinal game.
“Greg has earned equal, strong support and respect from his teammates, coaches, and opposition,” said Spear. “He is the leader in our back line – his movement, strength, tenacity, anticipation, communication are top, top class. Off the field, he leads too with the team's best GPA and will finish his course work in December, a semester early.”
Macnamara was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District second team in 2010 and earned first team honors this season. He is a mathematics and economics double major and has previously drawn SoCon Academic All-Conference, Academic Honor Roll and Commissioner's Medal honors. Macnamara was also one of 30 finalists for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for men's soccer for exemplary community work.
“He is what college sports should be all about,” said Spear. “Greg will certainly go down as one of the best leaders this program has ever had. We will miss him immensely, but he has set a high standard for others to emulate.”
Macnamara started his career as a midfielder and Davidson allowed 41 goals with just three shutouts during his freshman campaign. He was moved to center back his sophomore season and the impact was immediate as the 'Cats yielded just 27 goals. As a junior, the shutout total improved as the 'Cats earned six clean sheets while allowing 25 goals. This past season, Davidson blanked its opponents nine times and allowed just 22 goals.
McGue earned his first SoCon honor since being named to the SoCon All-Freshman team in 2009. The Dublin, Ohio native set new career highs with three goals and four assists for 10 points. He scored a goal and an assist in wins against Air Force and Gardner-Webb and tallied a goal against No. 25 East Tennessee State.
“We are so pumped that Brian's awesome contributions and crucial role have been recognized and rewarded,” said Spear. “Brian is the heart and the glue of our midfield. His work rate is tireless – he takes no plays off. And this is underlined by his work ethic because he gives it all in training and earns top fitness scores.”
Regular season champion UNCG and nationally-ranked Furman led the way in postseason awards. Four UNCG players received all-conference citations while Furman paced all schools with six on the all-conference team along with the Co-Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
Furman junior forward Coleton Henning and Georgia Southern senior forward Luigi Clendening were named Co-Players of the Year after finishing deadlocked in the balloting conducted among the league's eight head coaches. The tie is the first in the history of the conference. Henning is Furman's 12th player of the year while Clendening joins Tony Moffat (2003) as the only Eagles to claim the honor.
Coach of the Year honors were bestowed upon Appalachian State acting head coach Matt Nelson. Nelson, who took over coaching duties following the death of Shaun Pendleton in September, led the Mountaineers on a remarkable run of 11 straight matches without a defeat (7-0-4) immediately after taking charge of the squad. The streak was ASU's longest since 1978 while the team also set a new school record with 11 shutouts in 18 matches.
Defender Walker Zimmerman from Furman was voted as the league's Freshman of the Year
Furman led all schools with three first team all-conference members and six overall. Henning and Zimmerman were joined on the first team by goalkeeper Alec Kann.
College of Charleston, Davidson, Georgia Southern and UNCG each placed a pair of players on the first team.
Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players or for themselves in the balloting.
The 2011 men's soccer season reaches its climax this weekend as UNCG, Furman, Appalachian State and Elon descend on Boone, N.C., for the semifinals and final of the 2011 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship. The semifinals will be held at 4 and 6:30 p.m. Friday with the championship match Sunday at 1 p.m. from the ASU Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
Fifth-seeded Appalachian State defeated fourth-seeded Davidson (8-8-3, 3-2-2 SoCon) in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament Sunday to conclude the Wildcats' season.
