DAVIDSON, N.C. — Laura Murray (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Hannah Early (Huntersville, N.C.) combined for 33 second-half points and Davidson started its 2011-12 women's basketball season off with an 82-67 exhibition win over Winston-Salem State on Friday night in John M. Belk Arena.

Both players were very efficient with their shots as Murray was 10-for-16 and closed with 27 points to lead all scorers. Early went 7-for-11 from the floor and clipped the 20-point mark with 23. Davidson as a team shot 45 percent for the game, including 50 percent from the field in the second half when it started to pull away.

Sophia Aleksandravicius (Pound Ridge, N.Y.), the SoCon preseason Player of the Year pick, tallied a double-double (13 points, 17 rebounds) and had seven blocks, and eight Wildcats in all etched their names in the scorer's book.

The Lady Rams had a pair of double-digit scorers, led by Monique Williams' 12 points, but she was just 5-of-16 from the field as the Davidson defense held the Rams to 32 percent shooting. Vanessa Weston came off the bench for 10 points.

Up five at halftime, the Wildcats went on a 15-8 run in the first five minutes of the second half to open up a double-figure lead at 50-38, capped off by a Murray triple.

Early then caught fire over the next four minutes and scored 11 straight points to push the advantage out to 19 (63-44) with 10:23 on the clock.

Murray finished things off a few minutes later, netting six straight to give Davidson its biggest lead of the evening at 72-50 with 7:02 remaining. During a nine-minute stretch, Davidson outscored Winston-Salem State, 22-12 to grab its largest lead.

Tied at 14-all in the first half, the 'Cat grabbed a nine-point lead when they used an 11-2 run in an three-minute stretch and went on into the break up 35-30.

Davidson will open the regular season next Friday, Nov. 11, when it travels to Clemson for a 5:30 p.m. tip. The Wildcats home opener is on Monday, Nov. 14, against Mercer as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. Gametime is set for 6 p.m.

Single-game tickets for the 2011-12 men's and women's basketball seasons are now on sale. Men's single-game tickets are priced as low as $14 for adults and $7 for youth, while women's tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for youth.
