DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson senior tri-captain Greg Macnamara was recognized for his stellar performance on the field and in the classroom Friday, as CoSIDA announced his election to the Capital One Academic All-District team for men's soccer in District 3. He is now eligible for Academic All-America honors.
Macnamara is a mathematics and economics double major carrying a 3.75 grade point average and has previously drawn Southern Conference Academic All-Conference, Academic Honor Roll and Commissioner's Medal honors. He was named to the Academic All-District second team as a junior last season. Macnamara was also one of 30 finalists for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for men's soccer.
“Greg is a wonderful example of Davidson athletics and of college student-athletes, as he is equally and powerfully motivated both on the field and in the classroom,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “He is an avid student of soccer and of his classes, and he is a respected, disciplined and well-liked leader across campus. That is one reason his teammates have voted him captain for two years, because he sets a positive standard for others to emulate.”
The Arlington, Va. native has been one of the top defenders in the Southern Conference and the backbone of a Davidson defense that has posted nine shutouts this season, one shy of the team record of 10 set in 2003. He has scored two goals, including the game winner vs. Campbell, and assisted on the game-tying goal against College of Charleston that allowed Davidson to earn home field advantage for the first round of the SoCon Championship.
“Greg will finish his course work this December, a semester earlier,” added Spear. “So when we say our student-athletes graduate in four years, Greg has accelerated that even further.”
As a junior, he was named to the 2010 All-SoCon second team and the SoCon All-Tournament team.
Eight Academic All-District teams were chosen across the country for Division I, with those earning recognition placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. Nominations and voting for the All-America programs are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Fourth-seeded Davidson will host fifth-seeded Appalachian State in the first round of the Southern Conference Championship Sunday at 7 p.m. in Alumni Stadium.
