BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Four Davidson players posted double-digit kills, but the Wildcats saw their season come to an end with a 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22) loss to North Division champion Samford in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament on the Bulldogs' home floor Saturday night.
Christine Perzinski posted 17 kills and 11 digs for the Wildcats (15-15), while Caroline Brown tallied 12 kills and 17 digs. Madison Benedict collected 11 kills, and Tindall Sewell had 12 kills and five blocks. Ariel Ley finished with 51 assists, and Molly Crenshaw registered 18 digs.
Lauren Hutchinson led the Bulldogs (27-4) with a match-high 18 kills. Teammates Katie Murphy and Neisler added 16 and 15, respectively. Alexis Bauer paced Samford's defense with 20 digs, and Michaela Reesor added 16. Casey Garvey dished out a match-high 58 assists.
The opening set only saw three ties, with the Bulldogs never leading by more than three. Despite coming within one of Samford, the Wildcats were never able to take the lead. Samford's Murphy led the attack in the first set with seven kills. Davidson's Perzinski and Brown each tallied four.
Davidson took a lead early in the second set and never relinquished it, tying the match at one apiece with a 25-22 win. The Wildcats led by five before Samford went on a 4-0 run, which was ended by a Perzinski kill. A kill by Samford's Chelsi Carter brought Samford within two, but it wasn't enough as a kill from Benedict ended the set.
The two teams battled back and forth early in the third set and with the score tied at 10, Samford and Davidson exchanged points before the Bulldogs went off on a 4-0 run. Davidson overcame the deficit and tied the set at 18. Two consecutive kills by Neisler gave the Bulldogs a two-point lead, and a kill from Lauren Hutchinson extended it to three.
A Samford attack error and a kill by Sewell put the Wildcats within one at 21-20, but Davidson had a service error and a hitting error as Samford pushed the margin to 23-20. A Brown kill brought Davidson to within two at 24-22 and gave the 'Cats hope, but Hutchinson ended the set with a kill.
The fourth set remained close the whole time with neither team leading by more than two. With Davidson clinging to a 21-19 lead, Samford ran off five straight points to claim a 24-21 advantage. Sewell put down a kill for the Wildcats, but Neisler ended the match with a kill on the next play.
Davidson returns 11 lettermen, including three starters and its top libero, next season.
