DAVIDSON, N.C. – Marist running back Calvin McCoy rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown, and Jason Myers kicked two field goals to lead the Red Foxes to a 13-9 Pioneer Football League victory over Davidson Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Jonathan Carkhuff completed 26-of-39 passes for 215 yards, and Lanny Funsten caught seven passes for 55 markers for Davidson (2-3, 0-2 PFL). Peter Kidwell topped the Wildcat defense with nine tackles, and John Behm collected five tackles, including three for loss and a sack.
Tommy Reilly threw for 177 yards, and Kevin Fitzpatrick caught three passes for 57 yards to lead Marist (2-4, 1-2 PFL).
The Marist defense keyed the victory, holding the Wildcats to a combined 1-for-14 on third and fourth down and giving up 11 yards on the ground. The Red Foxes did not commit a turnover while forcing two Wildcat miscues.
“We had a good week of preparation, but we couldn't execute today when we needed to,” said Carkhuff.
“They have a good, physical defense,” added Davidson coach Tripp Merritt. “They played coverage today, dropped eight at times, but we still couldn't run the football.”
The Davidson defense kept the Wildcats in the game. Hanging on to a 9-3 lead early in the third quarter, the 'Cats held Marist on three straight running plays from their own 1-yard line and forced the Red Foxes to turn the ball over on downs.
The Red Foxes were able to take a 10-9 lead on a 3-yard McCoy run late in the third. Marist took advantage of a short field and drove 37 yards in four plays.
After a Wildcat turnover on a muffed punt that gave Marist the ball on the Davidson 18-yard line, the 'Cats held the Red Foxes to a Myers field goal, which made the score 13-9 early in the fourth quarter.
“Our defense played great today,” said Merritt. “They spent a lot of time on the field, and I'm proud of their effort.”
The defense gave the Davidson offense a last opportunity from their own 11-yard line with 3:16 left in the game after getting a 3-and-out and forcing a punt.
The 'Cats got behind the chains with a holding call on first down, and faced 4th-and-4 after an 11-yard completion from Carkhuff to Clem Butler. But Carkhuff's 4th-down pass to Butler came up short of the first-down marker.
With the score tied 3-3, Toms Bernhards-Callahan tied a school record with a 94-yard punt return for touchdown late in the first half. The 'Cats missed the extra point, though, and had to settle for a 9-3 lead at the break.
Davidson travels to Dayton next Saturday for a 1 p.m. Pioneer Football League contest.
Game Notes: Bernhards-Callahan's 94-yard punt return for touchdown equals the school record, set by George Hannen against Wofford in 1969… The return was the first punt return for touchdown since Ryan Hutto returned one 36 yards against Georgetown in 2000.
