Wildcats Return to Belk Arena, Host Western Carolina Friday

DAVIDSON, N.C. — After splitting a pair of decisions in Charleston this weekend, the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team returns to Belk Arena and hosts Western Carolina at 7 p.m. Friday night.
Western Carolina (7-13, 2-2 SoCon) is fifth in the SoCon's North division, while the Wildcats (12-5, 2-2 SoCon) enter the weekend in fourth in the South. Davidson will play only one game this weekend and kicks off a three-match road swing with a trip to Georiga Southern on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
About the Wildcats
Davidson has split both of its SoCon weekends in conference play, most recently beating The Citadel (3-0) and losing at The College of Charleston (0-3). The Wildcats also defeated Wofford (1-3) and lost to Furman (1-3) in the opening weekend of league play.
Sophomore middle hitter Tindall Sewell leads the nation with a .439 hitting percentage, while classmate Caroline Brown continues to lead the conference with 4.26 kills per set, which ranks 22nd nationally. Brown also ranks among national leaders in points (4.9/set, 22nd) and aces (0.4/set, 58th), and junior libero Molly Crenshaw is ranked 130th nationally (4.34/set) in digs, seventh in the league.
As a team, the Wildcats have the third-best hitting percentage in the Southern Conference (.243) behind Samford (.282) and Appalachian State (.246) and have held their opponents to the third-lowest percentage (.169) behind Samford (.164) and Wofford (.167). The Wildcats are also ranked among league leaders in assists (4th, 12.29/set) and kills (3rd, 13.69/set).
About the Catamounts
Western Carolina is coming off a 3-0 loss to UNC Asheville in a non-conference, midweek match Tuesday night. In SoCon play, the Catamounts have wins at UNCG (3-0) and Chattanooga (3-1) against losses at Elon (3-0) and Samford (3-0). Western has also defeated Charleston Southern (3-0), Gardner-Webb (3-2), UNC Asheville (3-1), Campbell (3-0) and N.C. A&T (3-0) and been swept by USC Upstate, Western Michigan, Virginia, NC State, Ball State, Purdue, Jacksonville State and Gardner-Webb.
Offensively, Western Carolina is led by freshman outside hitter Caitlin Piechota (2.73 kills/set) and senior middle blocker Carrie Minogue (2.22 kills/set). Senior setter Brittany Lysik leads the Catamounts with 535 assists (8.36/set) and is also the team leader in service aces (21, 0.33/set). Lysik is ranked seventh in the league in assists and ninth in aces, and is the only Catamount ranked nationally, 207th and 166th, respectively. Sophomore libero Morgan Cochran paces the defense with 168 digs (4.54/set) — fifth in the league, while Minogue is also the team's leading blocker with 44 blocks (0.69/set).
