TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After shutting out No. 2 North Carolina and Southern Conference foe Wofford, Davidson senior Chip Sanders was recognized as the top-performing goalkeeper in the nation for the week ending Oct. 23 by College Soccer News, as he was named to the website's “National Team of the Week” Monday.
Sanders (Thomasville, Ga.), a team tri-captain, made seven saves in each match, as Davidson defeated both UNC and Wofford by 1-0 scores.
“Chip has become a major impact player,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “You see that in our improving defensive stats, including shutouts, in the past two to three seasons.”
His shutout of Wofford was his eighth of the season, tying the Wildcat record set by Bart Creasman in 2003. The 2011 squad is two shutouts short of the single-season team record of 10, also set in 2003.
Davidson (7-6-2, 2-1-1 SoCon) will host three more crucial Southern Conference contests to conclude the regular season. The next match is Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Furman (11-2-4, 2-1-2 SoCon), a team ranked No. 23 by College Soccer News in their latest poll.
