DAVIDSON, N.C. — College Sports Madness recently released its preseason women's basketball awards and the trio of junior Sophia Aleksandravicius (Pound Ridge, N.Y.), sophomore Laura Murray (Harrisburg, Pa.) and freshman Hannah Early (Huntersville, N.C.) were each honored by the publication.
The 6-foot-4 forward Aleksandravicius was named to the Madness Mid-Major All American Third Team. She was one of just two SoCon players to be named on one of the four mid-major all-american teams, joining Chattanooga's Whitney Hood who was a first-team member.
Aleksandravicius was also named to the preseason Madness SoCon First Team, while Murray, who garnered 2010-11 SoCon Freshman of the Year honors last season, was named to the second team. Early, who stared at Hopewell, just down the road from Davidson College, was a preseason pick by Madness to win Freshman of the Year.
The frontcourt and backcourt teammates of Aleksandravicius and Murray were two of the best scoring duos in the SoCon, averaging 16.5 and 11.6 points a game, respectively. The pair ranked first and second on the team in scoring, with Aleksandracivius finishing third overall in the league and Murray pacing all first-year players in points per game.
Aleksandravicius, who as a freshman was named to 2009-10 SoCon All-Freshman Team, garnered all-league first team honors a year ago and was named to the All-State First Team as well. Murray became just the second Wildcat in program history to be named the league's top freshman, joining Katie Hamilton (2003-04).
Early had an outstanding prep career in both volleyball and basketball, earning 2010 I-MECK 4A Conference Player of the Year in volleyball and I-MECK Player of the Year in basketball in 2010-11. She led Hopewell to a second straight conference title in 2010-11 and was named to the I-MECK 4A All-Conference First Team. She was named to the All-Observer First Team and averaged 15.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game during her senior prep season.
Davidson, coming off a 14-17 campaign last year in head coach Michele Savage's first year, tips its 2011-12 season off with an exhibition against Winston-Salem State on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in John M. Belk Arena.
