Volleyball Opens Four-Game Homestand With Samford, Chattanooga This Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. — After three straight road games, the Davidson volleyball team returns home to host Samford and Chattanooga this weekend in a pair of Southern Conference matches.
The matches open a four-game homestand in Belk Arena for the Wildcats. Davidson (12-9, 2-6 SoCon) takes on Samford (19-3, 6-2 SoCon) Friday at 7 p.m. and Chattanooga (5-18, 3-5 SoCon) Saturday at 2 p.m.
About the Wildcats
Davidson is tied for fourth in the SoCon South Division and enters the weekend looking to halt a five-game losing skid. Four of the five contests were on the road and all five came in conference play. The 'Cats fell by scores of 3-0 at UNCG and Elon last week.
Sophomore outside hitter Caroline Brown led Davidson against UNCG with 12 kills and 10 digs, and junior setter Ariel Ley also finished with a double-double with 23 assists and a team-high 17 digs. Junior libero Molly Crenshaw tallied 16 digs. Against Elon, senior outside hitter Christine Persinski led Davidson with 11 kills, and senior opposite Erin Lupfer added six. Junior setter Ariel Ley finished with 31 assists, and junior libero Molly Crenshaw tallied a match-high 26 digs.
Brown is second in the league in kills (3.97/set) and service aces (0.47/set). Sewell ranks third in the country and the SoCon in hitting percentage (.431), and Ley is second in the league in assists (10.42/set). Junior libero Molly Crenshaw is third in the league in digs (4.73/set).
About the Bulldogs
Samford enters the weekend tied for first in the North and on a five-game winning streak. All five contests came at home, and the Bulldogs are 3-2 on the road this season.
Samford continues to climb the ladder of NCAA rankings in more than one category. Out of 322 teams that are ranked, the Bulldogs (19-3) are ranked fourth in the country in hitting percentage (0.290), third in total kills (1,080), 10th in kills per set (14.40), 25th in assists per set (13.03) and 41st in service aces per set (1.52).
Lauren Hutchinson, the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week, regained the top spot in the nation in hitting percentage, now boasting a season clip of .448. This is the second time this season Hutchinson has been at the top of the leader boards, finishing the month of September at No. 1, earning SoCon Offensive Player of the Month honors. Katie Murphy, who was ranked third last week, has now moved into the No. 2 spot in hitting percentage at .440. Casey Garvey also improved to her best ranking so far this season in assists per set, vaulting from fifth to third, now averaging 12.05. She is one of only four setters in the nation to average more than 12 assists per set. Elizabeth Neisler also moved up in the NCAA ranks, now ranking 34th in points per set (4.67) and 40th in kills per set (4.1).
About the Mocs
Chattanooga is tied for fifth in the North and has won three of its last five matches. All three victories have come in conference play.
The Mocs are coming off a 3-1 non-conference setback at Mercer Tuesday. Sophomore outside Jennifer Kuroski paced the offense with a match-high 12 kills, while junior libero Paula Passmore tallied 31 digs.
Junior Paula Passmore leads the SoCon in digs per set (4.86) while junior Christina Teter ranks seventh in the SoCon in hitting percentage (0.315) and eighth in kills (3.06/set). Kuroski ranks sixth in kills (3.21/set), while Bridget Camacho ranks fourth in the league with assists (9.04/set).

Davidson is back home for Parents Weekend next week as the Wildcats host College of Charleston and The Citadel in Belk Arena. The 'Cats meet the Cougars at 7 p.m. Saturday and host the Bulldogs at 2 p.m. Sunday.
