Moniz-Soares Wins Second Fall Singles Title, Wildcats Host Davidson Fall Classic II

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Hosting their second Fall Classic this year, the Davidson Wildcat women's tennis team had a nice showing over the weekend led by sophomore Brites Moniz-Soares on the Covington Tennis Courts.
The sophomore won her second singles title of the 2011 Fall season when she captured the Flight 1 singles draw with a 2-0 record, while finishing 3-0 overall for the classic. Moniz-Soares earned her first win when Alex Zinn of Charlotte had to retire with Moniz-Soares winning the first set, 6-2. She then took home a 5-7, 6-3, (10-5) win against a Gardner-Webb player.
Moniz Soares, who also won the Flight 3 singles draw at the Davidson Fall Classic I, started the weekend off with a 6-1, 7-6 triumph over Guinn Garcia of Wofford in the Flight 2 singles draw before being bumped up due to an injury in the Flight 1 singles draw.
Senior Stephani Synn started in Flight 1 and opened the weekend with a 6-4, 3-6, (10-0) victory, but was forced to retire when she got injured, resulting in the Wildcats bumping everyone up one bracket.
Nisha Crouser finished 1-1 in the Flight 2 singles draw. The sophomore earned a 7-6 win against Ioana Oprea of Gardner-Webb when Oprea had to retire. Crouser held strong against her Charlotte opponent in the second match, but fell in a straight set, 6-2, 7-5.
Competing in Flight 3 was Katharine Dicconson, who scored a 4-6, 6-4 (10-8) victory against her Charlotte opponent, but then dropped another super tie-breaker, 10-7, against Jenny Lunde of Gardner-Webb when the pair split their first two sets, 6-2, 4-6.
Frizzi Bschorer earned a win in the Flight 4 singles draw, while also competing in singles was Blake Nickles, Elise Held and Catherine Wood.
Held earned a singles title with a 2-1 record in the Flight 7 singles draw. The sophomore picked up two pro-set wins, 8-4 and 8-2, against two Charlotte players. Held also got a win in the Flight 6 draw when she scored a strong 6-2, 6-1 triumph against her third Charlotte opponent.
Wood finished strong for the weekend, capturing an 8-6 victory against Sam Sullivan of Southern Conference-foe Wofford.
The Wildcats had three doubles teams compete over the weekend, with Synn and Crouser going 2-1 to pace the team. The duo scored an 8-3 win against Gardner-Webb and then took an 8-6 triumph against Wofford.
Moniz-Soares and Dicconson, along with Bschorer and Nickles each played in the Flight 2 and Flight 3 doubles draw, respectively. The two Wildcat teams each picked up a win over the weekend. Moniz-Soares and Dicconson got an 8-2 triumph against a pair from Wofford, with Bschorer and Nickles scored an 8-3 win against a duo from Gardner-Webb.
Davidson wraps up its Fall season with a trip to the ITAs which will be hosted by North Carolina on Oct. 20-23.
