ELON, N.C. — The Elon Phoenix defeated the Davidson Wildcats, 3-0 (19-25, 24-26, 16-25) Saturday afternoon in SoCon volleyball action at Alumni Gym.
Elon (14-8. 3-4 SoCon) was led by Caroline Lemke's 14 kills, and Megan McMahon finished with a double-double of 24 assists and 16 digs. Ali Deatsch paced the Phoenix defense with 18 digs.
Senior outside hitter Christine Persinski led Davidson (12-9, 2-6 SoCon) with 11 kills and senior opposite Erin Lupfer added six. Junior setter Ariel Ley finished with 31 assists, and junior libero Molly Crenshaw tallied a match-high 26 digs.
The Phoenix turned an early 5-2 lead into a 14-8 lead in the opening set. Davidson fought back into the game with a 6-3 run, including kills by Perzinski, sophomore middle hitter Tindall Sewell and senior middle hitter Madison Benedict to get within three, 17-14, but Elon closed out the set with a 9-5 spurt for the 25-19 win.
Elon was in control early in the second set, opening a 15-6 lead, but Davidson responded with a 14-4 run to take a one-point, 20-19, advantage. The Wildcats got two kills from Lupfer and one each from Perzinski, Benedict and Ley as part of the run. A putaway by Elon's Allison Johnson tied the set at 20, and the teams went back-and-forth with ties at every point until at 24, the Phoenix won two straight on a Wildcat hitting error and a kill by Lemke to win the set, 26-24.
The Wildcats won the first three points to start the final set and held that margin, 7-4. But the Phoenix answered with a 3-0 run of their own and extended it to 13-9 behind a 6-2 run. That lead proved enough, as Elon went on to win the match with a 25-16 win.
Davidson returns to Belk Arena next weekend, hosting Samford Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. and Chattanooga at 2 p.m. the next afternoon.
