Golf 14th After First Day at Firestone Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – Led by sophomore Richard Fountain, the Davidson men's golf team sits in a tie for 14th with a two-round score of 594 (300+294) after the first day of the Firestone Invitational Monday at the Firestone Country Club.
The Wildcats struggled in the first round as Fountain's two-over-par 74 led the team. Fountain fired an even-par 72 in the second round to pace the 'Cats again and place in a tie for 31st at 146, two-over in the 17-team field of 90 golfers.
Senior Jackson Taylor (79+75), junior John Skeadas (76+74) and sophomore Sam Echikson (75+75) are all tied for 54th place at 150, six-over par. Freshman Todd Eckstein fired the second-lowest round for the 'Cats with a second-round 73 to bounce back from a first-round 79.
Davidson is in a tie with Miami (Ohio) (308+286) for 14th at 594.
Indiana (289+283) and SMU (290+282), ranked 34th and 36th respectively by Golfstat, lead the field at 572, four-under-par. St. Mary's (Calif.) trails by one stroke at 573.
St. Mary's Mac McClung leads the field individually with a seven-under-par 137 (71+66).
Play will resume Tuesday morning with the third and final round.
